Ordering a custom made wedding dress - thoughts?!

stephjbenton90, 11 October, 2013 at 10:44 Posted on Planning 0 13

I have recently started trying on wedding dresses, and although I haven't completely decided on what I want, I have been looking at buying custom made ones to order online (normally on ebay, brand new, but from China or Japan)

I am trying to keep costs down, and some of the dresses are really beautiful and a lot cheaper than buying a similar wedding dress from a boutique. I am wondering if any of you guys have any advice or experience on this? I am aware than even though they are custom made that it may need to be altered, and I would have room in the budget for this, but just don't want to spend loads of money on a dress that I am probably gonna spill my dinner down! Would rather spend more on the wedding rings and other things that we will have forever.

Any thoughts or advice on this?

I'd be a bit wary ordering online from china etc as sometimes, they use the real designers pictures to advertise and what you end up with is of completely different fit/quality. There's a Facebook page called brides beware (I think) and it has pictures of what was advertised and what was actually made!

Im sure there are some legit and really good Chinese wedding dress companies, just make sure you research lots before placing an order! Smiley smile

I have just found that brides beware on facebook, and the actual dress I was looking at is on there, and what they sent is vile!

it's definitely made my mind up, thank you so much for saving me losing some money! I think it's better just to find a dress, and grit my teeth and buy it!

Is it the Mori Lee dress? If so, it's a stunning dress and so worth buying the original if budget allows! Good luck with the dress shopping xx

Yes! I have never heard of that designer before (i'm really new at looking at wedding dresses!) but it's beautiful! The only thing I am unsure of is if the V at the back falls just a little bit too high? Think I would have preferred it just to drop a little bit lower, but still with a bow. I am waiting to go and try some wedding dresses on in a boutique to get a better idea of styles and things, but I just went to the national wedding show at Birmingham NEC and tried on Nicole Anne, Dolce which is a similar style. It was the first dress I tried on though, so i'm thinking that my excitement was just because of that, but I will certainly bear it in mind. I am quite open to having a preloved dress too, in order to save money. (I don't want to sound like a cheapskate, but I would be gutted at the end of my wedding day to think I had spent so much money and it was all over in 24 hours)

Why not look into getting one made by a seamstress locally to you? I have just paid my deposit on a custom made dress from White Leaf Bridal in Brighton. It is going to be stunning and exactly what I want rather than me not being able to change a designers dress because 'they don't like it very much when you do that' (horrible old hag in another bridal shop, 2013).

I was surprised at how much cheaper it was too. Okay so I wouldn't say 'cheap' but it has shaved £400 off my dress budget, leaving more for shoes!

I would stay away from the ebay sites that promise to make a designer dress for a fraction of the price. Not because you might get something awful, but because I think it is morally wrong to have an outright copy of a design that someone has worked hard to create.

I know I have harped on about this a few times, but I ordered my dress from Asos marketplace from this seller https://marketplace.asos.com/seller/weiweik. It is a risk, but I was prepared to make the £100 risk and it has turned out worthwhile. It is having alterations and will probably end up costing me 2 or 3 times what it cost, but it is exactly what I wanted and I have been able to customise it into a one off dress. I don't have any pictures of the dress yet as it has been with the seamstress for months, but I am going to try it on tomorrow and will try to snap a picture of it!

This is the picture from the website

Also to add, mine was not a copy of a designer dress.

I will check both of these ideas out, thank you. I think my problem at the moment is, that I know what I want, and unless it looks exactly like that on the hanger, then i'm not taking any interest in it at all! need to be a little more open-minded I think!

I am hoping that when people say you know the dress when you try it on, they are right because at the moment I feel like I am never gonna find the dress for me, and I've only got 10 months to go!

I was considering the same as you, then I read a post on here that suggested http://www.inspirationbridal.co.uk/ I've found a copy of the dress I fell in love with in the shops. Ok its a copy and therefore it has a few things that are different. But who will know? and I love the dress I've picked off the site, if i'm honest I love it a little more then the one I tried on. I'm yet to order it so can't tell you what the final dress looks like but others on here have reconmended the site and the list of mesurements she ask's for filled me with confidence.

I really wouldn't bother. it could cause real problems when it arrives and it looks like a rag. I purchased my dress from a shop , it was a sample dress but half price . Take a look many shops have sample sale dresses.

I'd heard of Brides Beware and had seen a few photos, but I'd never been to the Facebook page before. Some of those photos were shocking!

I just wouldn't take the risk of buying from China. If you have a smaller budget then you probably can't afford to take the "I don't mind losing £100" approach. There are plenty of ways to get a good quality dress on a budget. Sample sales, the high street, pre-loved or an ivory or white bridesmaids dress are all good options and you get to try on and feel the quality of what you're buying.
