Organised packer?

Storky, 6 February, 2012 at 10:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 47

I have a blank piece of paper and a pen in front of me trying to work out what to take on my honeymoon. I can only pack from a list otherwise I end up forgetting random but important things.

My husband is a 'chuck it in the bag and if I forget it, I'll cope' kind of chap.

How do you pack? It everything neat and folded? Do you roll things? Do you always take far too much or are you quite restrained?

i chuck everything i want to take onto the case in the second bedroom, including way too many pairs of shoes and handbags and then Mr F sorts it out and packs/rolls it all nicely..otherwise id literaly just zip the case up around the pile *is not a great packer*

I'm in your husbands camp. Usually the night before, meaning that I get zero sleep.

And I always take far too much and never end up wearing it all.

    Good luck!

I always have a list and always take more than I need.

I am also a pack and repack person, I will get it all to fit without shoving!!

I start by working my way through a typical holiday day in my head - wash stuff, sun creams, clothes, swimming stuff, evening stuff, bespoke requirements....

I pack for both of us. In the couple of weeks leading up to going away, I gradually put things on the spare bed as I come across them. I then pack things neatly into the bag, realise I have too much, then take it out and start all over again!

I'm planning on being a lot more organised when packing for our wedding/honeymoon and take outfits that will go together, rather than just a bunch of random clothes.

I don't have lists but I do have spreadsheets ? It helps me break things down into categories and it's easier to colour code than a list....

    Wahaha!

All depends on the type of holiday - beach/city/fancy dress.

I'm pretty organised. I have to be on account of my appalling memory.

I actually forgot my rucksack when I set off for V Festival. Got halfway to my friends house in Manchester from Leeds and had to turn back.

Not helpful, kharv! Maybe you should come over and we can drink wine whilst I watch the more accurate packers get to work?!

That sounds like a stellar idea.

I'm going to have to start thinking about our HM packing soon too. We're setting off for the wedding on the Thursday and won't be returning home before departing for australia on the Tuesday morning. Precision packing is going to be needed.

Me and Mr Moo have a system - I get the things we need together and he packs them.

I love packing but after years of carrying too much clothing which i do not wear, I now write a list of all the outfit combinations plus accessories and footwear then lay them all out folded on the bed. I then try to eliminate items that are duplicates of something similar in a different outfit selection and I do the same with footwear.

Shoes go in the corner of the case with undies and socks stuffed into them. I then fold and pack everything else. Perfumes and toiletries wrapped in bags in the middle of th case so they are cushioned to avoid breakage.

It seems to work for me.

WMS - but the complete opposite. H gets out what he needs - I cross said items off my list and pack for both of us ? Can't wait for our next holiday.... although it's not looking like it's going to be anytime soon...! xx

I'm a neat packer where H is chuck it in and it'll squash down!

I also write lists. One for me, one for H and one for toiletries/extras. I then tick them off as I pack them.

I have a list, and pack from that. For my kids, I just shove a load of clothes in, as they need more than me, plus theirs don't take up much room.

My eldest also "checks" me, as I work through the list.

H lies on the sofa the night before we go away as I go round getting all the bits I need and shouts through a few things he wants packed. I pretty much pack everything for him, as neatly as I can and then he dumps a few random bits in with it (usually jeans, boots and heavy jumpers when we're heading to the sun?!) and proceeds to blame me for not packing his hair gel/razor/enough socks(!) while we're away.

    *sigh* I need a holiday

I could have written this myself! Usually ends in "Well next time you can pack for yourself" which never happens!

I hate packing with a passion. Even if it's a weeks holiday i'm going on, i can't be bothered. I am however a list and pack kinda gal, and i do the same for H because he would forget his pretty head if it weren't screwed on sometimes.

I tend to list all the clothes i need, all the toiletries i'll need and any misc items that don't fit under toiletries and clothes.

I move house recently though, and my list and pack went right out the window. i opened a box and filled it with whatever came to hand.

I have to say that i regretted it greatly once i'd moved into our new place. There are still bags and boxes that need unpacked, and i can't find anything.

Do any of you actually unpack properly when you get to your destination? I don't. Normally we stay in a few places rather than just the one, but I would only ever hang up a couple of things. The rest stays in my suitcase.

depends how long we are in one place, if its a 2week holiday then generally lots to hang up, though small itemes, bikinis and t shirts/vest tops stay in the case

Mr C likes to unpack - this caused endless grumbles when touring Sri Lanka as we were only ever in one hotel for 2 nights then moved on.

If we are in one place the whole time, I will hang up dresses and the such like, but the rest generally stays in the case.

We are like you Cricks and usually move about quite a bit, so there's no point, although I will hang up suits/dresses if we're going to a wedding or somewhere else posh.

On the rare occasion we do stay in the same place for more than a few days, I will unpack and put the suitcase in the bottom of the wardrobe.

I never pack for OH because if anything of his gets forgotten he can't blame me!

I also always unpack everywhere I stay so creases drop out and I hate rooting around for things in my case.

I'm a super-organised packer! I've already started my honeymoon packing list/spreadsheet and we don't go until September!

I have lists, a copy of which gets carried in our hand luggage, and copies in each case. Therefore if we lose a case, we know what was in it for travel insurance purposes.

I pack all our things into packing cubes first, and then each suitcase has a mix of each of our cubes in. This way, if one case is lost or delayed we both have some of our things.

    All valuables in hand luggage.

OH is not so organised but sees the reason behind my methods and is happy to let me sort it out.

I used to have a thing about unpacking at hotels, I wouldn't because I worried I'd leave something behind in a remote corner or a drawer. However, somewhere along the line I have got over it and I do unpack now Smiley smile Makes it easier for me to see what I've brought with me and avoids those 'oh I could have worn *that* t-shirt, I'd forgotten I brought it' moments.

I do the same re:List for insurance reasons BV, and also pack half of each of our clothes in each case, just incase of loss.

I am a very organised packer. For honeymoon I sat down and said 11 nights = 11 dresses, 6 bikinis and coverups, 15 undies, and a few "incase it rains outfits". I then went shopping, bought it all and had it packed weeks in advance - as it was new and being saved... ? I am a bit of a weirdo..

I tried to implement the same sysyem on H, even resorted to hiding the new undies & Tshirts I bought for him, but he kept wearing them. ?.

The above works well, because I always end up ussing everything I buy, and when the case is full, no more or purchased (until duty free...)

They are lightweight fabric 'cubes' of various sizes and shapes (which is why I put cube in '') that you can organise your things into. Then you pack the filled cubes into your suitcases. I have one for underwear, one for t-shirts, one for towels, etc then lie my shoes on top of it all (another bonus, as the cubes stop your shoes from getting any dirty marks on the rest of your things Smiley smile

    If you go here: www.eaglecreekluggage.co.uk

and search the site for 'cube' it will bring up all the packing cubes. I think this is where I got mine from but you can get them on amazon too:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/eBags-Packing-Cubes-3pc-Set/dp/B004YLIS9Q/ref=pd_sim_kh_11

The pictures explain better than me!! They just help me keep my luggage much more organised Smiley smile
