O/T Avon

jem179, 8 December, 2009 at 14:08 Posted on Planning 0 9

I had heard that one of the best mosquito repellents (inadvertantly) was Avons skin so soft dry oil spray.

I just found out they are doing 50p delivery at the moment (finishes today if anyone is interested???) so thought I might get some. Going to Jamaica on HM and I'm convinced I will be eaten alive!!

Unfortunately they do two kinds!!! Does anyone know which one I should buy????

Not sure if they have changed the packaging as it's been a long time since I used this, but it used to be in a greeny/blue coloured bottle. It really does work!!

Yeah, its the green one that works. Don't think it has to be the dry oil - I think any of the lotions in that fragrance do the trick

Thanks maddiecat, I think I actually have some of that somewhere (I used to be an avon lady too but couldn't make it pay in my area). Unfortunately that's not on the web, just original (blue bottle and out of stock!!!!lol) and the sensual. It looks like its been recently rebranded but I'll keep trying!!

    Hi,

The avon stuff is good for midges but not mosquios I believe. You need stuff that has a 50% deet ingredient. I wouldn't only take the avon stuff with you if you don't want to be eaten alive. We were in Borneo and did a bit of research into the best products to use as we were in the rainforest.

Oo thanks lynsey I didn't realise that! I always end up with loads of bites and they always blister so I end up thoroughly miserable! Have you got any recommendations from your trip at all?

We went with tons and tons of stuff since we were literally staying in the middle of the rainforest and got it from Boots that had the 50% deet in it. Not all mosquito repellant has the 50% part.

We had a plug in thing - https://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Repel-3-Pin-Plug-In-Liquid-Mosquito-Killer-1-plug-in-diffuser-and-35ml-liquid-bottle_8616/

    and a roll on - https://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Insect-Repellent-Roll-On-Tropical-Strength-50ml_873006/

The roll on is kinda sticky and shiny on your skin but it works. H did get a lot of bites but not from mosquitos so I wish we had also taken a general repellant to use for just lying on the beach etc. We only used the roll on when we were right in with the animals. It smells horrible at the start so be prepared but you get used to it!

We had this at home but didn't take it and this is what I'd have used for the beach - https://www.boots.com/en/Jungle-Formula-Home-Abroad-Pump-Spray-75ml_122512/

That's brilliant, thank you so much! Think we will be mostly on the beach but I hadn't even thought of a plug in for the nights, great idea!?

The plug was great when we were in basic accommodation in the rainforest but all the posh hotels had similar ideas but it's worth taking just incase. We hadn't taken malaria tablets so wanted to be as safe as possible.
