WhiteRose84, 22 February, 2011 at 16:51 Posted on Planning 0 84

Now, I'm not pregnant or planning - but OH would like to start a family in the near future.... What names do people like/want?

We both like alot of boys names but not any girls names!

Both - Boys - Alfie & Finlay

Me - Girls - Isabel

OH hinted how nice it would be to conceive in Italy..... ? I'm too young for babies... lol!!!

xx

Girls - Eoife, Astrid, Ana. Vaguely tempted to find a pretty word that's a medical/anatomical term and see how that works out.

Boys - Jack, Harry, much more trad.

Megan is nice. Only Ethan I know is a bit of a brat so that's put me off it slightly. Do others find that their taste in names is coloured by people you know with that name?

Absolutely- I also have what I personally think of as 'naughty names' that I associate with naughty children

Also, can I recommend a book called Freakanomics, especially the section on baby names. It discusses how names say so much about you and your character before you even start (socioeconomic background etc). Also, it talks about how names move "down" through the classes, using Brittany as an example - Brittany used to be a "posh" name but now it's trailer trash. The last part of the section is the author's predictions for the newest popular names that would indicate "poshness". Various Shakespearean names that have so far gone under the radar were touted, as were musical terms. Also, mythological gods/goddesses are pretty much the reserve of the upper class.

If anyone's interested, apparently the following names are the epitome of white, middle-class: Sarah, Caroline, Catherine, Emma, Helen.

The children in my family are called Emilia and Eduarado (father's portugese) AND Thomas and Elliot on the other side.

We have picked all our names including middle names each, ( there's a chance we could have twins.)

BOYS: William Peter (William is a famous greatbatch name, Peter is Grandad's name and FIL2B middle name) , Jack Edward, (Both just love Jack and Edward, also my brother's middle name.) Also likes James.

GIRLS: Lilly Josephine (My Dad's mum's name + my mum's mum's name), Ruby Louise (Love Ruby and Louise my middle name.) Maybe Grace or Molly

I love all the traditional names i.e James, george, grace, emily.

We like Henry and Arthur for a boy, but not come up with a girl's name yet - I like Lucy but it wouldn't work with our surname and also Megan - but that's my best friend's name!

If I'd have had a boy, he was going to be either Aidan Carl or Timothy Patrick but if I had a girl and she was going to be Suzannah Adele then changed to Felicity, then changed altogether when she was born to Alexandra Jenny Louise! I hate my name (Brenda) and neither me or my brother (Roy) were given middle names or, as my Mother thought, names that could be shortened so we had to be called what she wanted us called! However, she didn't get her way with me because everyone calls me Bren ! I was determined to give Alexandra 3 names so she could choose which she wanted and also names she could shorten if she wanted - she's known to all as Alex.

I've always loved Lily (or Lily-Mae) - OH keeps saying no as he just thinks of Lily Savage!

We like Jack, Mitchell, Abbie, Megan, Rosie.

We're going to start trying from the wedding onwards and OH has said if we are lucky enough to catch on honeymoon and have a girl, we should call it Havana!!

There's a chance i could have twins (but i'm trying not to think about it). There are names that i just wouldn't call my kids, mainly due to little brats i've taught.

I like Jenson for a boy but OH said no Smiley sad

I think probably Ellie Rose for a girl. (Combines my mum's first name (Elizabeth - also my middle name) and OH's mum's name (Rosemary))

It's safe to say that our children will have quite unusual names. Our favourite for a boy is Harrison, but we also love Lars, Strummer and Milo (all members of our favourite bands!). For a girl we love Nyx- the Greek goddess of the night and the daughter of Chaos. Quite fitting for any child of mine really!

I used to work with a girl who named her first daughter Terra (as in Earth). At first I was very unsure about it, but over time it's grown on me. Now that she's a toddler, she definately suits it and gets "OOh you little Terra" all the time.

There is a little girl who was infamous on the streets of Liverpool before she was even born. Her name? Snow White.

Oooohhh....my other half wants babies now but i still feel young! (22) hes 30! so i suppose i've gotta think about him too!

It's a tradition in his family for boys to have the name James in whether it be first or middle name, i really really like 'Jake McKenzie James Algar' & for a girl i'd like 'Emily Jayne Algar'

Our friends named their little boy Milo last year.... we have seen lots of duplicates over the last 2 years with our circle of friends - lots of Jack, Harry, Henry and Charlie!

There is only one name that we have discussed and that is Peter for a boy, it was the name of OH's best friend and is my daddy's name.

I used to work with a Fiona Friend... genius!

Me and my OH are hopefully gonna start trying for a family after the wedding - I wanted a name that had meaning (like a grandad's name etc) but my Grandad's name has been taken by my cousin and my other grandparents names are old fashioned IMO; so thinking Maisie (OH's grandma's name) and Ethan just coz we like the name (actually from the film Due Date!!) but like a lot of other names too - Alfie is a lovely name but the name of my godson; Charlie is lovely too (and my Grandad was Charles) but my nephew and other godson has this name....this is what u get from being one of the last ones getting married and having children!!?

I really like Valentino, Rossi and Angelos but I think you'd have to have a suitably exotic surname for them to work!! (please tell me you have/will have!)
