OT Book Recs

mimimouse23, 16 July, 2009 at 10:45 Posted on Planning 0 9

I get paid on Monday and want to spend some of my cash on a nice new pile of books!

I like crime books, marian Keyes (although not really into girly books), twilight books and harry potter, also travel type books.

I hate stuff like mave binchy(sp?) and Jodi Picoult (sp?)

What would you recommend?

Thanks

    I love Marian Keyes too!

I have just finished Wedding Babylon, have you read any of that series?

I am also going to buy the new Sophie Knsella book (of Shopaholic fame). I like her books, yes a bit girly but they make me laugh.

Emily Barr writes books with a travel theme in most of them

    Thanks Cheska

I was looking at wedding babylon on amazon but they have sold out of paper backs and I am too tight to pay for hard backs!

I do actually like Sophie Kinsella so thats a good idea.

    Off to investigate Emily Barr....

Read this on honeymoon, and it was un-put-down-able! Highly recommend it.

    I like Jodi Picoult!

How about Dan Brown, although they are more thrillers than crime? He's a good writer though. Angels and Demons, Deception Point and obviously the Da Vinci Code are all great reads in my opinion. Although I know some are pretty cynical about his writing now that he's got so popular. I still think he's good though (this may be shameful as I did a BA in English Lit!)

Ian McEwan is very talented - quite 'lit' though and not crime. I would recommend Enduring Love, Saturday, The Cement Garden and On Chesil Beach, all are pretty dark in their own ways (and sometimes disturbing!) but great, thought provoking reads.

Cecilia Ahern is good for a bit of light relief but if chick-lit isn't your thing don't go there. I have read a few of hers and are okay if you don't want anything too deep but they are pretty airy-fairy. PS I Love You was good though.

Hmm trying to think of some others I've read lately and enjoyed!

Thanks everyone, loads for me to investigate! I wouldn't say I don't like chick lit books (I read ps I love you and sobbed the whole way!) its just I can only read one every few months or I get board.

Also I know loads of people love Jodi Picoult but I just find them a bit sickly, but just my opinion!

Love the Dan Brown books, can't wait for the new one (unless I was dreaming that conversation!)

Penny Vincenzi is really good. Historical in the way that a lot of her books are set during the two world wars and centre a lot around how peoples lives were then. She's classed as chick lit in Waterstones but it's not typical chick lit.

But then I also quite like Jodi Piccoult too - although some of her stuff is a bit much, I love My Sister's Keeper, 19 minutes and the like.

Totally agree with the chick lit. I'm the same, can read one every now and then but it's not something I can take loads of.

I would disagree with the Jodi Picoult thing though, I find her books quite intense and deep at times, with some of the issues she writes about, but not so much sickly! But then everyone has different tastes don't they.

I can't wait for the new Dan Brown either - it's called The Lost Symbol and is supposed to be a follow on from the Da Vinci Code. You can pre-order it on the Waterstones site for half price, but that's the hardback so it's still around £9. I want to wait for the paperback really! Not because of price so much but it's annoying lugging about a big hardback isn't it!

I like Marian Keyes and Cecilia Ahern. If you like them, you may also like Freya North, I think her latest one, Secrets was mentioned above, I've read most of her books and enjoyed them, although they can get a bit racy!
