OT (but honeymoon related): Do you tip at an all inclusive resort?

Little Madam, 30 May, 2011 at 17:44 Posted on Planning 0 7

Just read an interesting article for my resort on our resort re:tipping on Trip Advisor. The brochure clearly states "All tips are included" but a lot of members on there state that tipping is still common practise.

I've no issues with tipping, and it's something we regularly do in the UK when we pay a bill in a restaurant etc, but TBH i'm going to feel very uncomfortable tipping at an AI place where there is no bill to pay.

So... Do you? If so, how much? Any would you leave it on the table? Place in waiters hand? One big tip at end of holiday (which is what we did last time).

Thanks

If you feel the service deserves it, you should tip. I personally would not do a big tip at the end unless you are giving directly to the staff as otherwise I would feel uneasy as I wouldn't know if it was going to the staff.

On the TA reviews of where we just booked in Mexico it says the same thing - tips are already included in cost of AI hol. Others say service is fine without tipping. Another for example says take plenty of 20 peso notes for tips, and if you don't the hotel reception is well stocked as they expect you to get change for tips! Not sure what to think, but as a rule of thumb we would tip any place we were going to eat or drink regularly, as wait staff don't exactly get brlliantly treated or paid. I have done thankless bar work in my past so we will show our appreciattion if a job is done well! Nothing like working your bum off all night and into the early hours and being allowed to keep the 10p change (!) Every little helps I suppose, but I bet that the staff never see the tips that the brochure states they get anyway, so we will be tipping as we go.

I am aware this is probably a stupid question pandorasbox - but how would you do it?

It feels awfully flashy/show-offy to offer them tips personally as they deliver food, and i've heard leaving them on the table means they are shared and not given to the person who actually gave you the reason to leave the tip?

Perhaps me and OH are just a bit coy about money etc

Rightly or wrongly both trip advisor & the couples we kno who previously stayed @ our resort said u r better looked after if u tip but that the hotel staff u r better looked after & they really appreciate it. So I've specifically ordered £100 in 20 peso notes for doin this.

Some of the places we have been to have had huge bowls or a box on a table by the door in the restaurant and people would put a tip in there if they wanted. <\p>

Every AI holiday we have been on we have judged tipping on a individual basis. Recently we returned from Mauritius and we tipped the people who looked after us during our stay at the end of the holiday, giving it to them personally.

The hotel wanted tips to go in a box at reception but by what the staff were telling us, they hardly saw any of them!

We tried to do the same SaSasi but the travel agent would only give us something like 25x 20 peso notes, so we've taken the rest in 50s - which I assume will cover a breaky/dinner/lunch and one per day for room service.

I am fine leaving it in the mini-bar or for turn down, but I don't know why, I am finding the idea very cringeworthy. When we were in DomRep there was a man tipping $5 with every drink the bar man gave and everyone thought he was a flash Twunt.
