O/T but rrrrrr mad at my website designer!!

mrslowndes2b, 30 January, 2010 at 21:48 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hi

O/T decided on a new career which finally means I can be self employed although this is a way off and im still working full time but its a start, so I had a website done and for the price included SEO (which means sites like google will find you) whilst I didnt expect to be top of the first page I did expect it to be done!! Ive just had another web designer have a look at it and he said no SEO work has been done RRRRRRRRRRRRRR ?

Rant over!!

I had this happen to me with my last website, the guy took my money but didnt do any of the work on it that he said he would & then he just disappeared!!

I decided to take things into my own hands & got myself sorted out with a "mr site pro" site. That was jan 09 & it was the best thing I ever did. I can make anychanges I like to it without being charged & it has an in built seo thing too, so I am picked up by most search engines.

have you paid the guy yet??

I would get intouch with him & ask why he has not done it yet.

Hope you manage to get it sorted

    Debbie

Oooooh don't even start with web designers! I've only had bad experiences with the 3 I've worked with. one actually went AWAL for 3 weeks and I couldn't get in touch with him at all. I feel your pain!

I also did my own with Microsoft publisher and my own SEO work, I wouldn't pay anyone to do it as you lose control.

So sorry to hear about the trouble you've had Smiley sad

I'm a graphic designer and web designer/developer by trade, in webwork I specialise in ecommerce. If there's anything I can do to point you in the right direction, please let me know and I'd be happy to give you some advice. The amount of people who come into my design studio complaining of the same problems is unbelievable, though it doesn't take much time to fix these things usually.

There are lots of cowboys out there, especially those who think that because they can edit a template that they are designers!!! Makes me sooooo angry!

Anyway, I hope you get it sorted and if you want me to give you some pointers let me know

    xx

Ooh sorry to gatecrash but you wouldn't cast your eye over my eccomerce would you? I'd be ever so grateful. I'm thinking of packing it in as it's never really taken off like I had hoped it would (ie full time!) and that compared with some crap profit margins (a lot of stuff is personalised/made to measure so I have to dropship) means that I'm sure it's worth continuing with anymore which is a shame as I've put a lot of work into it.

I can pm you the site if you have chance?

    Thanks! ?

I checked your site Smiley smile

As you stated in your email the template and hosting is very restrictive and the page coding is abysmal.

Pages should be tweaked for speed and RDFa at the very least these days, alas more people go towards an eye candy site rather than one that looks good but works fantastically.

I just googled a common phrase for something relating to one of my services and I had 8 on the first page.

Also remember google doesn't even look at your Keywords Meta Tag,, Smiley winking

Opps, EDITED TO ADD: best get yourself some proper hosting and then you can tweak and adjust your site as required.

Oh thank you Phil, I wondered who you were lol ? To get different hosting would mean I lose everything and have to start all over which I just can't afford. I suppose it's a catch 22, I use the ones I do as it's in my budget but it doesn't help with getting out there. I did approach web designers and to have something designed from scratch I got quoted around 5K from memory. As say I may just give it up and cut my losses. Thanks again ?

There is one way of ensuring getting your name on page 1 on google and yahoo. I wont post how, although will answer through PM.

    £5K,, ouch!

A simple site should cost no more than a couple of hundred and then if you need a checkout, then our good friend Google offers one called, wait for it.. "Google Checkout"

My own sites cost almost nothing to produce and maintain.

About £5 a month for hosting, and £10 for 2 years domain name.

Ok, I have numerous sites so it does add up, but you are only requiring one!

You already have your content so to speak, just throw a new template together and copy your content over.

The checkout would need setting up from scratch but that's an easy task, just take it one item at a time.

I do assume I had the correct site when I checked, "Pooches in the ground",, (cryptic)

I did think it was an odd domain and site to be offering wedding related products.

Yeah 5k was the average when I checked into getting one developed from scratch. I did look into building my own which I did fine for a non eccomerce but when you have to start adding shopping basket etc it went over my level of already basic level of skill! Yes that the's right site, not wedding related no. ?
