OT Buying a wedding dress from America...

Melawen, 5 August, 2008 at 21:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I know which way WP is but I thought there would be more brides over here who'd been there, done that!

Work colleague is looking to buy her dress from the states and I said I had a source to find out. Has anyone used House of Brides or got a recommendation for a company to use (or rejects not to use). Oh and are the sizing guides accurate - as the US dress sizes are different to ours she doesn't want to get something in the wrong size!

Thanks!

    Not sure to be honest..

what I would suggest though, is to see if there are any wedding dress shops that sell the dress(es) your colleague is interested in here in the UK, and then she can go try it on, to see what size she'd need? Obviously don't tell the shop that she's going to buy it from the US ?

Thanks Mrs S - she's already done that bit (that's how she's found the dress) but she's not sure on transferring UK sizes to US.

I think it's two sizes down in the US. so a 10 UK is a 6 US, etc etc. i would think they'll give her the bust/wasit/hip/length measurements in cms, though, if she emails them to ask?

    Hmmm ok, well

does she know her measurements? Like, 30, 34, 36 or whatever?

that way, she SHOULD be able to figure it out.. ?

WFISS. Although I think it seems pretty common for bridal dresses to need altering so she should expect to need a tailor regardless of the size.

She may not end up with a dress at all as loads of designers are clamping down on US shipping to UK and they are pulling out more and more all the time , a huge internet shipper in USA has gone under this week acording to the american forums i am on for bridal shop owners. i am sure the UK girls will hear about it soon enough when their dresses dont turn up a d emails go unanswered . also tell her to be aware of taxes and to make sure she has a seamstress on standby over here , if the sizing is wrong i dont think she will be able to return it and even if she is the cost will be expensive with the insurance and everything

Thanks everyone - I will tell her (and pass on your warning Cariad).

Do take heed of what Cariad said, when I was buying my dress I nearly went with Bridesave. Thankfully I didn't because it closed before I made an order.

I would recommend that your friend finds every store that stocks the dress she wants in the UK and see if you can get it cheaper that way. I bought mine from an online company here and even that came with problems, if I had to do it again I'd never go down that route.

OMG - this is not looking a good option. I was lucky buying my own dress - I got the fourth one I tried on. Never looked at any others. Admittedly it was in the sale but I loved it and couldn't face doing any more shopping!
