O/T camping question!

*hoppit*, 19 July, 2009 at 18:31 Posted on Planning 0 6

I am going camping for the first time in a couple of weeks to cornwall (OH has persuaded me as it was this or no holiday). I am a bit worried as tents have no locks on them. this might seem really silly, but what is there to stop people going into your tent?

At festivals we've used padlocks before....but if someone wants to get into your tent, then they will!

Lock valubles in a car, if someone wants into your tent all they need to do is slice it down the side with a knife, sometimes if they see padlocks they think there is something worth stealing so will do this.

I disagree.......don't take them with you at all!

But most festivals and some camp sites have secure safe boxes (in a kind of locker area), which you can rent, to put stuff like car keys in.

she didnt mention going to a festival. I would rather lock things in my car which is covered by insurance, you always have to take some sort of valuable items with you ie wallets, cameras etc. If there are lockers thats ok but if not take them with you or lock in the car

I completely agree, we have never used a padlock. However we also do not leave valuables in the car. We try not to take too many valuables, but obviously we have things like mobile phones and ipods, but we take these with us when we go out.

You'd have to check first if your insurance does cover valuables left in the car.

I know that the OP didn't mention that it's a festival that she's going to, but many camping set-ups offer these facilities. If the OP is camping in the complete wilderness, then I'd suggest just keeping valuables in a backpack (ie with you at all times).

    Thank you,

we are going to a camp site for 4 nights. think I will be taking my camera with me where ever we go, and phone (although mine is quite old now and not worth a penny!). I will def. make sure I dont take any other valuables. Must get OH to check the insurance tho, and ring the campsite to see if they have some lockers as him and his mate whose coming wanted to take their DS's and poss their guitars, which they were planning on putting back in the car at anytime we are out and about.
