O/T Can I have a cry on your shoulders please?

Houdini, 15 February, 2010 at 18:04 Posted on Planning 0 14

Some of you may, or may not know, that myself and OH have rescued lots of small animals over the last 2 years. We have adopted around 6 hamsters and 2 gerbils as well as my OH's V Day present yesterday being two cheeky new boys!

Anyway, I know you shouldn't have favourites but one of my little Roborovski boys, Rio, was an absolute darling. He was so friendly and had the cutest personality of any of them. I have just found him 'asleep' in his cage. ☹️

He has been showing signs of getting old in the last few months and we did have a vets trip with him last month but it's still a sad sad time for me. Part of me is relieved that he isn't in any discomfort at all now, and he isn't struggling to do things he used to love to do - like being a complete mentalist running around his cage!

Anyway, indulge me if you will. Introducing, and saying a sad goodbye to, Rio:

His mansion!

Sorry the first pic is so big. He was a cutie!

I had two roborovskis, they are gorgeous and i can completely understand your soft spot for Rio!! so please accept our condolences x x

I say had, as about three weeks after we got them skinny killed fatty (yes thats the names we gave them) we were btold they would be fine together and were for a while but i think they reached sexual maturity or something, anyway after one scrap and a trip to the vets it was suggested we try putting them back together and if they fought again to keep them separate well in the morning we only had 1 and he is still going strong has a fab character roborovskis are quite sociable really but OMG do they move!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks girls. I'm really trying to be practical about it. But he was a mummy's boy so it's hard.

I've never really known anyone else have robos Lorna. That's some very bad advice the vets gave you there (as I'm sure you now realise!). Rio was in a cage with his brother Wesley but they were separated after a scrap and both lived (live in Wesleys case, he's still going strong!) a happy life alone. They got lots of attention one on one from me!

They are quick though, aren't they? I love it when people ask how old they are, not knowing that our old boy Ole is well over 2 now! They just think they're babies and haven't grown yet! And you're right, they can half shift. As my OH found out when one of them made a dash for it when he was feeding him. It was 1130 at night and I had fallen asleep on the sofa and I awoke to a mighty crash as OH dived across the floor to stop him escaping! ?

    I miss him already.

Sorry to hear your news Raef. My chinese hamster died last month - he was just over 3 so a good hammie life. Before him we had a couple of Roborovski's so I know how cute they are. He definitely had a pretty impressive mansion! Our new syrian is very jealous!

    RIP Rio. x

Thanks again girls. We've just been over to my parents to bury him as we don't have a garden and that was horrible. Cried when OH asked if I was ready to put him in the hole he'd dug. I wasn't.

Sorry to whoever it was I made cry (shwany?), I didn't mean to. I love the support network here. I am sure some people will think I am over reacting as I know a lot of people see hamsters as disposable pets but he was still my baby and it's nice that you are all recognising that. He had a personality of his own which made him special no matter how small he was.

A quick little story to prove this. Rio had a little routine when he woke up. He had a particular place he liked to go for a wee and he would have to go to that corner as soon as he woke up; he would back himself into the corner, do his business, and then kick sawdust over it. He was a special little boy. Sleep well fella.
