celticgoddess, 14 April, 2011 at 22:19 Posted on Planning 0 9

Remove a permanent ink stain from a leather sofa? its a very very dark brown colour and is less than 2 months old and tonight ive noticed an ink stain on it......one of my daughters was using the permanent marker for a project but i didnt know she was sitting on it when i wasnt in! im soooo annoyed....there was an 'ink away' kit supplied with the sofa but its for ballpoint pen ink not the sharpie pen kinda thing......so it doesnt remove the permanent kind......been told all sorts of things like hairspray nail varnish remover etc bt these can make it worse

thought id ask u lovely ladies as u always seem to know stuff!!

You can get leather cleaning kits i believe if you search around on the internet. There are companys around that can clean it for you as well. worth asking one of them if you get really stuck.

Our DFS rep suggested taking out an insurance (which we didnt) and they should be able to help with the repair/colouring. If you did have an insurance then maybe it is worth giving the sofa supplier a call? I wouldnt touch it with the nail varnish remover or anything else, you will just scrape off the colour and will end up with even bigger discoloured patch.

As a leather crafter I'd say don't even bother trying if it's sharpie marker - I use them for drawing on leather and it DOESN'T come off. Other markers may come off but you'd ruin the leather by trying - or be left with a discoloured patch anyway.

Can you move the seat cushions around so you can't see the stain?

If not I'd go down the insurance route.

The advice from my cousin would be to get one of the kits with an ink remover in it, around £25 from DFS - but if a leather crafter says it's a no go I'd be inclicned to follow her advice!
