OT - Fish Pedicure Warning

*porsche*, 2 March, 2011 at 20:56 Posted on Planning 0 15

Not sure if any of you have read this but know it is a bit of a craze for hen nights at the minute.

Apparently health and safety experts are investigating if it is actually as 'clean and healthy' as some companies are claiming, due to various infections being passed on. It is banned in some cities in the USA because of this.

Just thought I'd warn you girlies.

I think I will give that one a miss, the thought of fish nibbling at my feet makes me cringe.

I will stick to my normal pedicure, much more relaxing.

We were only talking about this at work today. The girls were saying that there are growing reports of cross contamination due to lots of people putting their feet in the same water.

Fish tanks will filter dirt/waste but not get rid of infections, , ,?

I've been for one with my mum and think it's great, it really gets rid of dry/hard skin and makes your feet lovely and soft!

As for the current safety scare, I'd probably suggest avoiding it if you have any open sores/wounds on your feet or ankles but otherwise I haven't seen any evidence of a potential risk. It's no less hygienic than walking barefoot around a swimming pool or communal changing area (e.g. at the gym) and it's just a shame that a couple of poorly-written news articles are leading people to believe otherwise.

This was originally introduced for psoriasis sufferers to ease away the flake plates.

My local one is great. They filter the water and sterilise it with and ultraviolet light to prevent the spread of infections. I was there the other week when they turned a woman away due to athlete's foot, and they make you scrub off fake tan as the oily nature can harbour bacteria. There's no more risk than trying on shoes in a shoe shop or walking around barefoot in changing room at a leisure centre.

Most of the health and safety scares came from the first one to open years ago, and the bad ones are all closed down now.Dodgy electrical safety has nothing to with hygiene either.

And it does leave your feet lovely and soft.

At last, I have found someone who is the same as me!!! When hubby and I went to Jamaica a few years ago, I was know by the other hotel guests as the girl who hated fish! I would go in the sea for a few seconds and as soon as I saw a fish, I would run out screaming! Swimming pools are so the way to go!!

I too would love to have the fish thing done but I am way to scared. I did think about just doing it to see if it would help beat my phobia but as soon as I get near the shop, I get too scared and walk the other way!!!!
