OT - Foundation Primer

justpeachy81, 7 July, 2011 at 18:24 Posted on Planning 0 19

Does anyone have any experience of using primer? I went to a make up counter today and the lady said to try it as it makes your make up stay on for longer. I've had a look online and one that keeps cropping up is Smashbox, am tempted to try it but wanted to see if anyone else had tried it and is it a worthwhile purchase?

Thanks!

Hi I've not tried that one but I had my make up trial today and the lady used primer on me and it did indeed stay on all day Smiley smile

I use the Laura Mercier one which is good, but I think it depends on your skin type as well. I think the Laura Mercier is good for general combination skin not sure about the Smashbox one though.

Sometimes I can get away with just the primer and no foundation as it really evens your pours out.

Will have a look at the Laura Mercier one as well, always a bit wary of what some make up counters tell you as often they just want you to buy more, but i had read before that it was a 'must have' for wedding day to make your make up look fresh all day!

    thanks guys!

I would recommend Smashbox primer, best I have used.

I would recommend the Smashbox primer, it is the one I use in my professional kit and the one that seems to go best with most skin types. However, I would also say that if you apply your foundation properly you dont need one, I tend to only use a primer on women with a lot of creases/wrinkles or with incredibly dry skin.

If you don't suffer with either of these skin problems, I don't think it's necessary for you to splash out on one at all. A good foundation, applied correctly, will be fine.

Eye primer on the other hand...I wouldn't be without one!

For a budget one, I would go for Boots 17 PhotoFinish Primer

There used to be a max factor foundation that had two tubes, one with primer and one with colour that was really good! Do they even still make it?

I've got the Smashbox primer. I'm not a big make-up user but when I do use the primer it gives my skin a smooth even tone ready for my foundation,

Not sure about primer, but my make-up lady for my wedding gave me a great tip which I have started using for 'special occasions'. (I have dry skin everywhere apart from nose and forehead, so this may not work for those with oilier skin... not sure!)

She said to put on your moisturiser about half an hour before you apply your makeup. Put on quite a thick layer and rub it in just enough to make it disappear, but don't rub it in 'properly' (i.e. you can still feel it lying on your skin) and then just leave it to sit there. When you then come to do your makeup, you've got a nicer base to start on.

Well I used primer and MAC foundation and my foundation lasted all day and all night. I dont know if that was to do with the primer or not but I thought I'd do everything I could to make it last as long as possible!

When I had my make up trial the lady used a primer. I've never tried one before and I really noticed the difference in how long my make up stayed on for. No idea which one she used though sorry! x

Boots' Protect and Perfect has a primer in the range. That's supposed to be a good one.

I use Smashbox Photo Finish on special occassions, it was recommended by makeup lady & i have found I use less foundation with that. I also have Benefit PorFessional - which is a pore minimiser like a primer and I really like that under foundation.

I like you have been on all the forums and what cropped up time and time again was estee lauder double wear. I also used estee lauder spotlight. Well, i cycled to work, did zumba with the kids at school, cycled home and make up still perfect. They give you samples to try. My bridesmaids are converted too as coverage is excellent too! Jx

I have 2 - Benefit That Gal and Benefit Pearl Meets Girl - both are very refreshing and leave my skin nice and smooth all day.

I use MAC prep & prime and it's absolutely brilliant. I put my make-up on first thing before we head out to a wedding, run around all day, and my makeup is still fine by the evening. Have also tried Laura Mercier oil free primer but I find it gives my skin a fairly powdery finish which I'm not too keen on. The Laura Mercier finishing powder is superb though, much prefer that to MAC.
