OT: Got my moving date, and new address and just handed in my notice!

Little Madam, 9 May, 2011 at 14:00 Posted on Planning 0 18

Well, I am well on the way to being a wife now.

We'll be moving into our first home together 2 weeks before our wedding, and I've just handed in my notice, as I have a 3 month notice period and it's 3 months and 4 (?!) days until the wedding.

Now.. To find another job 300 miles away.

Scared doesn't really describe how I am feeling right now. Although I am hugely excited too - the first step on my road to a new life.

I am really excited, but it's not like me to be so, well silly almost as to quit my job without another lined up if that makes sense?

I hear back from a job I really really want sometime next week, but I don't hold a lot of hope as the leave i'd need to get married is during their busy time. I have another few interviews lined up, but it's a bit of a nightmare as Catterick doesn't have a lot around, and certainly very few professional companies that i'd work for.

That said, i'd love to be an accountant for a smaller company in Catterick, but just nothing going around at the moment.

I wouldn't be too jealous Shelley we have been given a place in literally the LAST place on earth i'd want to be (OK, that might be a slight exaggeration, but if you gave me a list of all the places army houses were, this would be either my last or second from last choice, but, at least it is very safe). When does your OH move up to Catterick? And do you now have a military house that they'll help you pack up or will you have to do a first time move on your own? (Sorry lots of questions).

I do hope so Naboo! ?

Shelley - nope that means no help this time, but next time you move you should have someone come in and move all the boxes for you IIRC and then unpack them the other end too. And there is a £1,000 moving allowance. IIRC your OH should get a week off to move though.

The area is fine as a whole TBH, there is only one place in Catterick i'd not like to live in, which reminds me of the council estate at home I'd always avoid, a place called Colburn, thank god we're not there. But we are on camp, and it kind of makes me feel like i'm in prison or in the forces too! Still, I am being ungrateful and i'm sure it'll be fine.

That must be very scary for you - do you know anyone at all in Catterick?

@ Claire - It's a long story, but when you rent from the army you either get a house on camp or on the surrounding estates and sadly we got the on camp option wich I really really am not keen on and have put up a lot of resistance to, but ultimately I don't have any power to change it other than privately renting or buying in the area. We've had (many) discussions about it and I can see why it's the best option financially - I won't bore you with the details, but rent is so cheap, it's not worth buying right now.

@ Mrs Shark - nope, we like to keep busy ?. Madness!!

@ Naboo - I can't wait for that lovely countryside for sure, it's just the practicalities that scare me. I know it can get very snowy up there in the winter and last year I cried while stuck in the car during some bad snow on the A1 ? I am a wimp. So worried how it will pan out that way etc.

@ Shelley - I don't think it's the first time, as it's relocation allowance, rather than intial location allowance (I know, mad!). Yup try and get your OH to specifically specify you don't want Colburn, it is reasonably close to the shops etc we discussed the other day so you may need to keep an eye out. The best area is Brough-st-giles. Brand new estate, beautiful houses - it's where we'd buy if we were going to buy. Aw don't worry everyone is so friendly up there, you'll know everyone within a few weeks - i've already started to get to know OHs friends wives who are lovely but can't wait to go to some classes etc and meet someone who doesn't want to talk about my H being/going to Afghan etc.

Shelley your entitled to the allowance which is called Disturbance allowance every time your OH is posted to another (permenant)location and which requires you to move house. This is also when he should get the week relocation leave. Sorry to gatecrash the thread, I'm sure LM wont mind!

Oh and LM...congrats on getting your house through!!! Big changes ahead but I'm sure you'll be just fine!

    I really hope so.

At the moment I live in work provided accomodation (a gorgeous little cottage in the countryside which is 30 second walk from work) and OH lives in the communial block, and we split weekends between my parents, his parents and weekends away. So anything has to be better!

I've not told OHs Mom yet as she'll be gutted, so need to break it to her tonight - I know she doesn't want him to fly the nest properly - she doesn't like it when we have 2 weekends away on the trott so she'll struggle with our 6 weekly visits.

Good luck Little Madam ? I'm sure things will work out...brave / exciting times. My OH is in the forces too and he's currently based abroad but trying to get a posting back to the UK - I've said that I'm not relocating to another country because of this, things are a little uncertain but fingers crossed we can work something out and make it more than a weekend thing after we have gotten married. I hope your OHs mum's ok tonight...at the end of the day, she wants you guys to be happy x x x
