OT - horrible atmosphere in office!

Vikster79, 5 August, 2010 at 10:45 Posted on Planning 0 7

We have just been called in to be told that they are letting 2 engineers go within the month and they cant be sure if that will be the last. Although my job is relatively safe as there is only one of me and i dont know what the engineers do, i consider where i work to be a bit like a family and its very sad. I have worked with them for 13 years and have grown up with most of the guys and we are quite close nit. I am having a panic though and cant stop thinking about what would happen if i lose my job and how would i survive and its a very scary prospect. Never had to deal with this before, any tips before i drive myself insane with the "wot ifs". Would you suggest just keeping a foot in the door of the job market?

Kinda know how you feel, there is just me, one other person and the boss left! And I am being 'called in for a chat' on Tuesday ... best thing to do is job search every day to see if there is anything you can do / is better than you already have. You don't have to apply for them but it lets you know what the job market is like if anything does happen. Hopefully as there is only one of you, you are needed.

I agree with TakenMan, keep your eye on the job market and know what's about. Sorry to hear this is happening, I hope everything works out for both of you x

To put it lightly - that sucks!

My advice would be to keep looking at the job websites or even engage a recruitment consultant if you have a highly skilled job?

In terms of the atmosphere - i'd either give them space and time or call a meeting and all agree not to mention it and to keep your heads up (thats what we did in a company I used to work for as we were all very close).

Its dreadful - i know there are hundreds of companies having to deal with this throught the UK, but you never think it will happen to you. Poor chaps have little kids, with one of them just becoming a dad this year. My boss was visibly upset and now as he calls it "feels a tw*t"! bless him. I suppose you just have to get on with it and keep on truckin :-)

Oh hun.. I feel for you I really do. I was in exactly the same position this time last year.

I was working for a company and my team were the best of friends, really close, had a great laugh together and it was just the best place to work. When we were told that the company had gone into Administration the first thing I thought about was not my job but leaving my friends and my team behind.

We stayed as a team until Christmas. Some team members got jobs and moved on and some stayed. I ended up leaving in January and it was the worst day of my life. And funnily enough, everyone that has left our team have all said the same thing - that they dont like their new jobs because we arent a team any more.

However, we have to move on and what will be will be. I wouldnt stress yourself out to much so I would definitely start looking around at other jobs to make sure you atleast understand the market a bit better and judge for yourself what you should do then.

I hope it all works out. Its hard having to part from people that you spend most of your day with and have a close relationship with but a fresh start may also be a good thing for you too.

That probably hasnt helped things too much but I couldnt Read and Run ?

Ah that sucks. I am a teacher so my job is relatively safe, but my OH lost his (very well paid) job over a year ago and has yet to find another permanent one which isnt great. I would make sure i knew if there were jobs around that you could do and poaaibly even call a coupe of places that are advertising just to get a feel for what is out there. I would also update my CV (I did this recently and was shocked about how much work i needed to do on it) so that it is ready should you (fingers crossed you wont) need it. xx

    It sounds horrible!

i got made redundant last year and it was so out of the blue i didnt know what to do.

my advice would be to be prepared! get you CV sorted and perhaps register with a couple of recruitment agencies so that if the worst thing does happen, u already have your toe in the recruitment pool!

on a lighter note, i really like your new profile pic Vikster, very in keeping with your theme!! and in the words of Dory, just keep swimming!
