O/T I did it!!!!

English Girl in Bangkok, 15 June, 2008 at 12:27 Posted on Planning 0 23

Hello everyone. I ran my first half marathon today! I am extremely chuffed as was so nervous I wouldn't manage the distance. I ran plodded the whole thing and actually really enjoyed it! Am on such a high now. The best moment was as I sprinted to the finish line (don't know what happened, I was absolutely knackered but then suddenly my legs took off on their own) and the MC shouted "and here comes English Girl in Bangkok from Thailand finishing the half marathon, let's give her a big cheer". Felt great and I ran across the finishing line with my arms in the air! ?

Well done you...i ran a half marathon a few years back (before i got old and my knees gave way) and loved the feeling of achievement it gave me. My tip would be to make sure you keep moving around as it wasn't the day after but the 2nd day that all my muscles seized up and I could barely walk down the stairs...so plenty of hot baths, massages and don't sit down for too long at a time. x

Thanks! I'm a little achey today so wonder what I'll be like tomorrow. My sciatica is giving me the most probs and my shoulders and back - but that could be an affect of the sports massage!

There's no way I'm planning on doing a marathon Wonderstuff. I found the half marathon training hard going, as it meant lots of long early morning runs for the last 6 - 7 weeks, to get my body used to running at that time and while it's still "cool". But I'll definitely be doing the half again next June and try to improve my time. I managed 2h 42, which I know is slow. but I deliberately plodded as I was so worried I would burn out too early.

Next run is a midnight run in October - 12km :-)

Well done and definitely have a sport massage as I always found the 2nd and 3rd days the sorest. After my half marathon I couldn't walk probably for days and wish I had thought ahead and booked myself a pampering session. Fab time and well done on taking it gently. I wish I had done the same years ago as I totally burnt myself out as I run the whole thing like I normally run a 10k and OMG it was terrible. My time was 1h 55 mins which was slower than I wanted but if I ever do it again I won't be setting myself a time as it was hell on earth!

    Congratulations

I might go for a massage tonight, but my back is really sore now, so might leave it and go tomorrow as was reading on BBC that when recovering from a long run that a massage can aggravate the tears in the muscles and the best thing is to have the massage on day 2 or 3 afterwards.

I'm glad I took it easy, but definitely want to work on my time. Running in this heat makes me really slow compared to when I run in the UK. There is just no air here and we started the race at 6am but by 7am the sun was beating down on us and it was over 30 degrees.

Ih 55 sounds an amazing time to me! Have you done any running since?

Well done! That's brilliant! I don't think I could do a half in that climate. Just started picking up the milage so I'm up to 10 miles before the wedding in time for my next half in october.

It was my quads that were a bit achey after my 1st one but I kept walking about that afternoon and next day. Never had any problems in subsequent halfs

Cheers. Training in this climate is certainly hard work, but I figure if I can run here, I can run anywhere.

Today it's just my bum that's aching! Glad I obviosuly used it tho!

Back to the gym tonight for Body Jam, but no running until the weekend, although dying to get my trainers back on again!

30 degrees would melt me! I can't handle that sort of heat at the beach never mind running in it. I did run afterwards but at the start of last year I had Sciatica and running really bothers my hips and back now. I also just don't have any spare time but I will need to get back into it before the wedding as I've put on 3 stone!

It was easy to do the training when I was single but since we moved in together my priorities changed and having the time for 40 miles a week is impossible now. I would like to be able to do a few half hour runs every week so fingers crossed I can start again.

Before the half marathon I was convinced I would do a full one as the training wasn’t too bad but after the event I quickly changed my mind! I am very competitive so I got very concerned with my finishing time and I’m sure that just made the whole experience a hellish one.

    How are you feeling today?

Feeling great today. My back gave me most probs yesterday but got an early night and it's back to normal today. I also suffer from sciatica but don't notice running aggravates it too much thankfully.

I know what you mean about training time. For my long runs I was getting up early on a Sat or Sun while H2B was still snoozing - but that's why I won't be doing another half for a while because getting up at 5am on a Saturday really started to take the enjoyment out of running.?

I only trained doing 3 runs a week, as when I first started running 18 months ago I used to run 5/6 times a week and burnt myself out. 3 runs suits me much better and means I can do other things that I enjoy. I never want running to take over my life!

Just saw this and wanted to say congratulations ?!!

Was thinking of you as I was running a 10k this weekend, and was thinking how motivated you must be! I did enjoy my 10k though, so might (in very hesitant terms) try and start training a bit more and see if at some point i can do a half marathon too - you've inspired me!!

Well done again, and glad you've recovered so quickly ?

Well done on the 10k and if I can run a half then anyone can. I am not a naturally talented runner in any shape or form. I found a lot of the training for the half tested you mentally, as it's about getting over that "I'm tired" part and "My legs hurt" and keeping going. But I also found training for the half much easier than for the 10k. I think if you can run 10km fairly comfortably then increasing your distance gradually each week isn't too bad. I'm looking forward to doing some more 10kms, I've got one in October in Bangkok, then another at Angkor Wat in Cambodia in December which I think will be amazing. Tempted to do the half in Cambodia, but I'll see! I half followed the Bupa training plan, but only ran a maximum of 18km about 3 weeks before - think the Bupa tells you to run up to about 20km and to do that a week before the race!

Wow, you're doing some runs in some amazing places - I guess that must provide some inspiration too!

I think i will try and keep going then, and get more comfortable at 10k then maybe start increasing my distance. It's quite a good way of de-stressing too, I find, because I think about the running more than anything else!

Good luck with the rest of your runs too ?
