O/T Ironing Service

The Sock Chicken, 18 March, 2009 at 21:19 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi, after finding out tonight I may be losing my evening hours at work (which is basically my wedding saving money), h2b and I have been thinking of things I can do for money. I have always fancied running a small ironing service.

A few questions for you............

How do you think I should charge? Per item? per hour? per basket?

And how much?

A friend of mine takes all his stuff to the launderette to be ironed and they charge per item, so i guess you would do it this way. things vary in price. for example bed sheets are more expensive than clothes but proper shirts are more expensive than a pair of jeans so i guess you would have to do research on this. it also depends if you are going to have a collection servie as you would charge extra if you provided this. dont think iv helped much after that long rant all iv suggested is you charge per item. lol hope iv given you food for thought though x

I would love to pay someone to do my ironing, god i hate it

Have you looked in the windows of local news agents to see what they are charging? There is always people advertising ironing services in ours. Think it would be easy to charge by bag or basket rather than individual item. I would pay £5 - 6 as i hate it so much but have wedding to pay for so will have to keep doing my own for now, maybe i could ask for this as a wedding present lol.

    That could be me talking.

Zippy - have you tried Johnsons in town? You could get a full price list from them for an idea. I would imagine you could earn more like that but you might get more business if you charge per bag/basket tbh. It doesn't sound so much if you say £8 per bin bag or something than if you say 50p (or whatever) a shirt...

We pay £12.50 an hour (it comes as part of our cleaner's duties) but in that time she can iron 10 shirts or bedding for a king size bed.

My Mum's friend's husband runs an ironing business and they charge per item - I think it's £1 per item with bedding being £10. I'd ring up some local places and see what they charge (under the guise of a potential customer) and then you can see what is the norm for your area.

I was thinking of maybe £5 per basket like this. Does that sound ok? Or a bit cheap? I was thinking about maybe avoiding bedding, unless its single or cot bedding.

You can do mine for that....I could send it special delivery and it would still be cheaper than I'm paying now. That is too cheap - you'd be paying yourself about £2.50 an hour!

I think if you were going to charge per basket you'd have to put some limitations on it or you may end up with people taking advantage. Next time you're ironing for yourself , perhaps see how long it takes you to get through a certain amount and base your charges on that?

    Hi

I looked into someone doing mine, she said she charges .....wait for it...........£40 a bin bag (which wasn't allowed to be stuffed full) but if there were shirts in the bag she would for them seperately and charge £2 per shirt, personally I thought that was taking the proverbial. I would have happily paid £20 a bin bag though.

    Good luck !
