O/T Irrational fears

Kebab thief, 28 March, 2008 at 19:08 Posted on Planning 0 24

As part of a medical research programme I'm participating in I had to go for a session with a psychologist type-person earlier. I think they were trying to find out if I had any mental health issues because they kept asking about my moods, any anxieties, if I could hear voices no-one else could hear etc. Then he asked me if I had any irrational fears, I told him that I was scared of moths and he asked me to explain why. I couldn't really explain it, I just don't like them but he kept going on "But why are you scared of them? What do you think will happen if you see one?" So I said that obviously nothing would happen and I just didn't like them. Then he said "Well what would happen if I put a moth on you right now?" and I (being a bit pissed off by this point) said I'd probably smack him in the face - apparently now I have anger management issues.

I mean for heavens sake, I just don't fuccking well like them. I know nothing bad will happen and I'm scared of them for no flipping reason whatsoever - that's why it's called an irrational fear.

I neglected to tell him that I am also truly terrified of clownsid="size1">

Ok, rant over.

So anyone else have any ridiculous fears? Or am I the only person in the world that has ever been scared of anything?

What's a peabug? A woodlouse? They're called cheesybugs in my house, no idea why. H2b is a bit nervous of them too but he calls them pillbugs. So many names...

My mum always called them grandaddies?

Dont know if this is an irrational fear or just plain OCD but I cant sleep with a door open, I dont like to see the top of the stairs or the landing. Always convinced I'll see someone walking up them!!? Especially as h2b works nights!

I hate sleeping with the door open too but that doesn't class as an irrational fear I'm afraid! ?

He kept asking me if I had the urge to do anything repeatedly or a set number of times, my mind immediately fell in to the gutter [:I] and I struggled to hide my smirk so he probably now thinks I was trying to hide an OCD or something. I think a lot of people have slightly obsessive tendencies, my dad always turns things off at the mains and unplugs them as soon as he's finished with it ie. boils kettle then switches off and unplugs, unplugs tv when he leaves the room etc. I'm too lazy for that!

I wouldn't worry, most of the questions for research make absolutely no sense unless you know the study inside out...and even then are often very artificial!! (Did a psych degree for my sins).

I have loads of irrational fears, silliest one is about double decker buses...just don't know how they work when it's windy. I know it's mental!

I suppose i can admit to some severe OCD tendancies, some which actually run my days for me but i wont go into them now..........

i have a total and complete fear of yellow bendy fruit

i have had hypnotherapy for it but still hasnt worked, the lady thinks it has something to do with the fact that when my mum was pregnant with my younger sister she craved these fruit (cant even say the word ?) and my sister was an absolute tyrant and i suffered many a black eye and cut lip at her hands so apparently i now associate them with my sister and her nastiness

i cant even walk past them in shops, my kids and hubby love them but theyre not allowed to have them in the house, we store them in teh shed when he buys any. they have to be in 3 carrier bags, all of wihc need to be tied up in my trolley and car so i dont put my hand in a bag by accident and find them ?

Mine is a fairly common one - spiders. When I'm asked why, I always say I must have been a fly in a previous life. ? I would scream and beat the crap out of anyone who put one on me! Even money spiders freak me out. In fact, even typing this is making me itchy... I swear I can feel one on me...

h2b's are fish and clowns. He traces both back to films he watched when he was too young - 'Jaws' and 'IT' (Pennywise the Clown... he's a scary dude!)

I also have the OCD thing. I don't like odd numbers. This is why our wedding is on August 2nd rather than August 9th, even though this decision meant there was another wedding at our venue on the same day! [:I] I can't eat an odd number of sweets or biscuits etc. I also have a symmetry thing, so if I walk through a door and catch my arm, I have to walk through again and deliberately catch the other arm. Or if I have an itch and scratch my left cheek, I have to even it up and scratch the right cheek too. And the kids at school all laugh at me because I have a pack of coloured pens and I have to have them in the same order when they're put back in the box.

    I'm a real weirdo aren't I? ?

I totally agree about the odd numbers thing! When we have the radio on in the car I can only have the volume at even numbers, same with the TV, surround sound etc., the annoying bit is it always seems to be at a perfect level on 7, too quiet on 6 or too loud on 8 but I just ignore that. I also can only eat Tic-Tacs in even numbers and get peed off with H2b if he only eats one. I have a thing about everything being aligned properly too, I'm forever straightening up mirrors and pictures when I'm at other peoples houses.

I had to have our wedding on 16/8/8 so that all the numbers were even and the month and year added up to the dayid="size1"> [:I]

Ok, so maybe I am a little obsessive.....but I still stand by my original statement about irrational fears!

My irrational fear is of snails and slugs. I know they are hardly going to chase me but I really dont like them.
Unluckily for me we have been doing a topic this week on them (Im a teaching Assistant) and it's been very dificult looking at them with a class of 5 year olds!

I absolutely can't stand things that flutter, I think they are going to fly into me and get in my hair.

I can admire that butterflies exist as amazing feats of evolution in a David Attenborough stylee......but I secretly hate the bastard things ?
In fact, I've just gagged looking at a thread of synthetic ones.

It's a little known fact that moths are, in fact, the work of the devil.

Omigod, I have major issues and cant believe I'm even typing them out!

I fainted once (when I was 14 or 15 - I'm now 30!!) and now I have this irrational paranoia that it's going to happen again (hello - hasn't happened in fifteen years!!). I am trying to contain my fear of it happening on my wedding day by assuring myself that a couple of glasses of champagne will avoid any nasties...

But honestly, put me in situations that I can't just move away from (i.e. other people's weddings and I'm sitting in a church and can't get up when I feel like it) and I get shaky and a bit lightheaded.

God help me if I took part in some psych study.

Ps - I've got a psych degree lol!

I think it would be more strange if you didn't have an irrational fear - surely everybody has one?

I am terrified of cockroaches, which is unfortunate as you see a lot of them in Bangkok as they thrive in the humidity here. I scream if I see one and can just about manage to kill them with a can of spray but can not go near them even when dead.

I also have an irrational fear over milk! Very bizarre but I can't let it touch my skin at all and I won't kiss Mr. B if he's drunk milk recently. If it touched me, I would have to go and scrub my hands.

And lastly I have an OCD, which really freaked me out when I first discovered that's what it was. I am a hair puller and for some reason unknown to myself I get pleasure from pulling out my hair. Fortunately I have managed to stop and haven't pulled since October.

We are a weird bunch aren't we? ?

I'm sooo glad it's not just me!! My OH has great pleasure in moving things slightly, or just tilting picture frame so I know it's out of place!

I also can't stand anything that flutters or flaps. Many times my OH has chasd me with a moth in his hands - remind me why I'm marrying the bully [?]

I have the obvious fears of dying, especially drowning, but my most irrational fear is of bread knives!?!?! [:I]

But I think I would have hit him very hard too Kebab thief! [B)]

sorry just noticed this is it new???
