OT little update on SEN issues!

The BFG, 16 April, 2010 at 19:42 Posted on Planning 0 10

Well, coming to the end of the school hols and we are picking up on our battle again to get Lucas into a specialist ASD school, his statement review in march went well with all attending agreeing that Lucas needed more specialist provisions, his current school have said they are doing all they can for him but he needs more.

I went to see a new solicitor in Bristol today (i sacked the other one as she was as much use as a chocolate teapot!) and she was Fan-Bloody-Tastic!!!! she has said his current statement is 'illegal and quite frankly a load of rubbish'! she has dealt with our LA before and knows we will have to fight for the placement we want and that he has been offered at Farleigh College but there are a number of things that are working in our favour though, it does seem that we may not get anywhere near sorted until January at least!! which although better than a kick in the teeth is a real blow to Lucas as his current school is totaly restructuring and moving to a new site, so will be closing in June for 2 weeks while they move to the new site they will then re-open at the new site then close 3 weeks later for the summer holidays! Meanwhile he is due for an Occupational therapy assessment on 23rd of April and will be seen by an Educational Psychologist on 30th April.

The solicitor also asked if we were having any help from social services - my response??? i laughed we have been going in circles with social services since Lucas was Diagnosed in 2002, being passed from pillar to post as the regular childrens social services dept dont have the facilities to meet Lucas's needs - yet the childrens disabilities team have said he doesnt meet thier criteria! he's yet again fallen through the net and being failed by those that CAN help well the solicitor was on the ball there too and has said she cant see how he doesnt meet their criteria and is writing a letter to them to request all 3 previous assessment reports - yes i did say 3! thats how many times we have been passed backwards and forwards, and that they re-assess, so fingers crossed we will start getting somewhere.

In between times H2B and i have to go and visit the 2 schools that are the potential LA possibilities should they decide to move him, to enable us to gather as much information to help us in our 'QUEST' for an apropriate placement.

Poor Lucas at the moment too is struggling a bit as he is still in pain from his OP on Tuesday, we went out for dinner yesterday for his birthday and it was something he was so looking forward to but he really didnt enjoy it at all, he could barely eat his meal which was from the 'younger' childrens menu and he refused pudding - bless him he just wanted to go home, he's not sleeping well despite his melatonin and he is panicking about school on Monday, ive told him he doesnt need to worry its not a problem but he is in a real state A) because of the pain and not being better for school and B) because he is full of anxieties with regards to school generally i just really feel for him - makes me want to cry sometimes watching him go through this, but hey we count our blessings as there are people in a much worse position than us!!

On the wedding front things seem to be going to plan - still not sure about the date change yet but all 'our people' and the regisrar etc have been fantastic at bearing with us and holding the potential alternative date for us until i can let them know for sure which should HOPEFULY be in the next week!!

Aw chuck hope he's feeling better soon! it must be horrid for him to be ill especially on his birthday

but on the plus side your new solicitor sounds great, really on the ball, and if she keeps onto social services then thats a massive help for you. hope things carry on going your way!

Glad the new solicitor is good. Shame he was poorly on his birthday Smiley sad I'm sure you'll make it up to him when he's feeling better.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I really hope you get the results you want Lorna. Thank god your son has you to fight his corner for him.

It shocks me how difficult it can be for deserving people to get the help they need.

PS - Go on, change your date... You know you want to be my date twin!

Glad to hear someone is fighting his corner, there's so much ridiculous paperwork associated with these things. There really should be easier ways to get into the school that meets his needs.

Good luck & keep keeping us informed x

Pleased to hear you have found a decent solicitor. It really annoys me that firms get away with taking people's money when it comes to these situations and provide a bad service.

I'm surprised that Lucas doesn't fall within the criteria of SS, its probably because they know you will cope and are a decent parent. I've known kids with ADHD who have been under the disability team!

Sorry to hear he didnt have a great birthday.

Hope you get to make a decison about the date soon.

Aww thanks for your support, it is a real bummer when you have to fight for the simplest of things, despite the knockbacks we will carry on as im not being fobbed off any more, i know the services are there and available in our area so will keep going.

On the OP front Lucas hasnt gone back to school today he's still 'suffering' bless him i took him to the doctors earlier as i was concerned it wasnt healing properly, and the nurse has said its infected and he is now on antibiotics 4 times a day - they are mahoooosive beasties too! lol He is sleeping a bit better though so thats a plus side!

    Hey Lorna,

I work with children in a ARB school and i get so mad at things like this. Its ridiculous, the poor children that get missed and lost due to paperwork ect, winds me up just tlking about it. We only hold 33 places in the centre and parents fight so hard for them and struggle so much to get their children in where others it seems effortless! its such a shame because specialist schools and ARB's can make such a difference.... just need bigger provisions!!! We are constantly upset about students going to mainstream settings, buts theres nothing we can do!

Glad to hear the solicitor is getting things sorted, I really do feel for you and your family, especially Lucas - I only see school side of things and I can only imagine how anxious he is.

You got a lot on your plate... make sure your taking time for yourself (not helped at all, but situations like these are completely wrong.)

    P xx

    Thanks P

it means alot to hear you say that, we do have alot on but as much of a cliche as it may sound, ive got to the point where i dont know any different, this is what our lives have become, we are just about to start the whole process with my eldest as he is also struggling and now since his diagnosis of Autism and ADHD we 'should' be able to acess more support for him - today we met with his school and have requested they do a C.A.F and other various asessments hopefuly leading to a statement for him!!!! we are in no doubt that he could cope in mainstream but he does need the correct support, oh well here we go again!

Well i'm glad your getting some good advice and hopefully will all be sorted soon!!! I just see all these families struggling for support and advice and all these 'professionals' not having many answers!

Anyway hopefully it all gets worked out for you and your family! Lucas is lucky to have his family fighting for him!

    P xx
