OT (maybe) Are Students just seen as a resource for free labour?

sgreen, 6 March, 2012 at 12:38 Posted on Planning 0

I keep seeing posts on this wedding forum where poster keep adding or suggesting that they'll just get it done by a student for free.

Why do so many people see students as a free resource? Surely they need paying too?
and also why do people expect a student with no experience to actually do a decent job? as opposed to someone else without experience?

I do see your point that students should get paid too. But most students need experience and/or to build up their portfolio to prove their skills to future paying customers. So I think students mostly appreciate the opportunity of 'real' work.

Anyone hiring a student is taking a risk as like I said earlier, they haven't proved their skills yet. However, many places training students (I know my local hairdressing college does this) will have one of the qualified staff put their hair right IF the student makes a mess of it. But usually the student's are closely supervised and told what to do step-by-step.

Having a student photographer is a risk as you can't re-do the day to take better pictures. But most people would have seen bit of their ameture work befor deciding to hire them. And a budding photographer would jump at the chance to have a real wedding on their books, as it shows future brides-to-be what they can do at weddings.
