O/T Nails

lizzie1982, 3 April, 2011 at 21:45 Posted on Planning 0 16

Bit of a rnadom one, but does anyone have any tips for good hand / nail creams / ways to make you nail grow stronger / quicker?!! My nails are awful, they just don;t seem to grow and split really easily. I'm not a fan of the false nail look so don't want to get acrylics e.t.c for the day but I don't want my nails to be horrid! I'm planning on having a shellac manicure (amazing!) so my nails will liik nice, I just want to make them grow a bit longer! Nothing I do seems to make any difference!

I use CND (Creative Nail Design!) Solar Oil. It's a nail and cuticle conditioner. I just paint it on morning and night and I started using it (about three weeks ago for same reason) my nails have grown lots and are much much more stronger! I got it from the Alton Towers Spa because I live near it and go there quite often but I imagine beauty salons sell it or maybe you could get it online?

Lizzie - start having your shellac done now. My nails were rubbish before hand and now I have shellac done, they grow really well underneath, don't split or break. By the time your wedding comes round you'll have lovely nails!

Great tip, I will definitely do that. I love shellac! It makes such a difference, and even better if your nails grow well underneath!

CB I seem to be following you around today stealing your beauty tips!

Me and MIL have booked to be shellac'ed for the first time on Thursday, while i've very interested to see the results on MIL I'm a bit nervous for my own as I have quite nice nails already and it's taken me ages to grow them following years of fake nail abuse to my nails! I don't want them to be ruined - would you still do it if you were happy with your current nails? Will they further improve?

    Thanks

To be honest I think that the shellac ruins your nails big time.. I think its fine as a one off but after my wedding it took me ages to get my nails back to normal. The other thing about the shellac is the french manicure looks very much like false nails. I did not realise this and then it was too late!!!! The benefit is the non chip and non smudge. The colour ones are far less flase nail looking. I find cuticle oil is the best thing for nails. I am a nurse and wash my hands so often each day, my hands are ruined but the oil worked!!!

I've got the same problem so I have started with the Shellac early and it keeps your nails really strong. Have them done a few weeks before the wedding and then they shouldn't break. You can have them redone on the day/day before and you should have a bit of length by then.

How has it ruined your nails? It's just gel and peels off if you have it taken off properly.

My nails are definitely stronger for it, LM. I've not seen any damage to mine, quite the contrary, in fact.

I'm not a big French Manicure fan but I do tend to have pale colours most often as it looks more professional for work and the grow out phase is less noticeable. LM - if you want to try something natural, try my regular 'routine' there. I have a layer of the amusingly names 'romantique' with 'negligee' over the top. It gives you a bit of pink colour to make your nails look healthy with a very subtle shimmer.

I think French Manicures can look lovely and natural, but only if you've got fairly short nails. The longer they are, the more false they look! Also, it depends on how good the person doing your nails is! You could always ask for a more subtle version if that's what you want.

I use OPI Nail Envy on my nails and have done on and off for years. I absolutely love it and it works really quickly. I find after about 2 weeks my nails are starting to look much better, longer, and are definitely stronger (making tiaras plays havoc with my nails and they are usually split and ragged, but nail envy stops this happening!)

    K xx

Thanks CB I have jotted down those names for my appointment. MIL will also go for something quite natural as she isn't meant to have anything on her nails.

I have quite long nails and my usual beatician knows me well enough to go easy on the white tip and will put a less translucent top coat on to make it very subtle wheras a salon where I don't know the ladies would put the white tip ontop of the pink like paint which makes it very bright and very artifical looking.

Am I right in reading you have to use 100% accetone (sp) to remove it?

I think so - I get my salon to remove it, though.

Can highly recommend biosculpture/calgel on your nails. I have this done every fortnight and makes your nails grow as your nails don't break underneath. You can have french or colours. I tend to have a colour as not a big fan of french.
