OT the c... word but i need help!

irrelephant, 12 November, 2009 at 13:35 Posted on Planning 0 19

I know its the big C... word but i need help sorting out my parents gift!!

I'm making them a foodie hamper and have no idea what to do. They love wine, cheese, dark chocolate etc. but i don't really know what to put into it. I'm also on a budget!

So far i've got a list written down of:

Red wine (which my cousin is kindly going to give me from his work sample stock as he is a wine merchant)

Cheeses (but what kinds? my parents already buy brie, camembert, roule, cheddar...)

cheese biscuits

a slab of dark chocolate

nuts possibly.

Can anyone think of anything else? i'm aiming to be around a £15 budget.

Thanks!

thats what I was going to suggest. Also if you go to a farm shop rather than to a supermarket you will be able to get some nice local cheeses, if you tell them what they would normally buy they will recommend similar, but it will be slightly different and nicer than the supermarket stuff.

Maybe a bottle of port too - always goes well with cheese!

    Lovely Idea though!!

Thanks girls. I was thinking farm shops, but am obviously on a budget so that might be a problem. Also i don't know when me and Mr delicious will have the car so that could also make it a problem.

I was thinking of maybe putting a nice pickled chutney in?

I'll have to get mr delicious to drive me around on the sunday before christmas!

How about having a go at making some things yourself like a xmas cake, there pretty easy to do, you could even try making the jams and chutneys, i think your parents would love the fact you've put so much effort in.

lovely idea by the way x

What about a cheeseboard and some cheese knives? Asda usually do a nice set around Xmas and small enough to fit into a hamper.

Happy&stressed: thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately i don't have the time for doing things like making my own chutneys and preserves. I'm a final year history student and am so busy its unbelievable! but i might buy a couple of small sampler type pots and pop them in.

Nicola07: They already have a cheeseboard and posh knives. I might have a look anyway though. thanks for the suggestion.

How about something different like a nice Christmassy plant or something?

This is a brill idea - I'm nicking it! I always make my mum and dad a Christmas cake and pud, but will throw in some jams and chutney too this time. Just had an experiment and some nice napkins (even paper) folded up pad the lot out and make it very decorative. My mum and dad never have napkins, so that'll be useful too.

Another thought, how about some hot chocolate sachets and tiny marshmallows for those cosy winter evenings. You could even put in a christmas carols cd you can get them for a couple of quid. Tell me if ive gone to far, its late in the evening, had friends round, drank lots of wine!!!!!

lauraSJ: as for the plant, i'm afraid it would probably be dead by new year! i once left a miniature cyclamen at her house and asked her to water it and when i returned four weeks later it was dead still on top of the piano!

fancy free: i love that loads of people want this idea! i was wondering the other day how i would make it look nice and figured i would get some tissue paper and cellophane maybe with some ribbon and just leave the cheese in the cooler in the garage till later in the day, because it probably won't want to be under the christmas tree all night!

jules: those are some fab ideas, love the chocolate one! i think i'm going to go with the cosy night in (assuming they manage to get rid of my sisters for a night! lol)

happy&stressed: i like the CD idea. we do have a couple of christmas CD's already but will have a look for more. might even see if i can get a cheap jazz music one, they love jazz.

deedee: feel free to steal. i saw the idea when i browsing M&S website and thought it'd probably be cheaper to do my own.

i hadn't thought of lidl for shopping! mr delicious will definitely have to drive me around when we get home then. also i didn't know ikea did food. then again i've never been anywhere near an ikea in my life so i wouldn't have known!

thanks for your suggestions they are really helpful. i'm going to print the suggestions out and show them to mr delicious next weekend when he gets home.
