O/T - The Riots

eliz9390, 9 August, 2011 at 23:19 Posted on Planning 0 15

Anyone on here been affected by them? I can't believe how quickly they are spreading. As I'm a long way away from London they seemed a 'million miles away' but they are now rioting in my town. My dad, who lives abroad, has just rung me to find out 'what on earth is going on', it seems that we are world wide news. So worrying. ☹️

I work for the ambulance service in Birmingham and was on shift last night. It's not as bad as the media portray - yes, there's a lot of damage, but only 7 people needed A&E treatment last night in Birmingham. Close liaison between us and police meant every job was vetted before we were deployed. Mostly though, it's situation normal. The police are obviously very busy.

What we need is a few days of heavy rain!

I have such admiration for people who work in the emergency services....I take my hat off to you MrsH to be! It's reassuring to know that it's not as bad as the media portrays. I'd def agree with the heavy rain idea! (I'll try singing in a bit...that should work!) Hope it all ends soon.

It started in my area an hour ago (leicester)i live on the edge of the city so not directly affected. it's angry young men apparently according to local media reports and that the police have full control. i can only hope so, as have many friends living in central apartments. its's at times like this you realise what is really important and puts my wedding worries into perspective. stay safe everyone x

Hi Beckstar, I'm in Leicester too (well, the edge of it). Sitting here listening to the radio reports seem to suggest that police have it under control...... Totally agree with you that it's at times like these that put our wedding worries into perspective xx My first thought when I heard that they were rioting in Leicester was 'Oh no...my venue...what if they smash that up!' Then logic kicked in and I thought of the poor people who have lost their homes and businesses to arson during the riots.

Its only natural to think like that as you have spent time, energy and money which means you care about your venue so i totally understand.

hopefully we will have a centre left tomorrow! dont think it will get too bad... our youths seem pretty tame compared to others ha ha.

My OH's brother is a London Fireman, and when they were on shift 2 nights ago, they got the call to go out and they had been barricaded into the firestation by the rioters and they were threatened that if they even so much as tried to get out they would be attacked.

He was on shift again last night and wasnt looking forward to it. Not too sure how it went down.

Also have family working in Uxbridge and Slough, and both were sent home early because of rioting in the town centres.

MrsH we really dont need a few days of heavy rain. I get married in 2days! The riots worry me as we travel around a Lot and because i hate not knowing. I'm also hating the hearsay on facebook fueling the fire of panic. Feel very sad to know there were 300looters in my local town hence 300people blending into our community when they have an alteria motive to do bad and screw people over. Smiley sad

Anniepie - Hope your friend is ok and they have got their car fixed?

Karakat - I admire you so much for the job you do! I couldn't do it myself, I have such respect for you.

Moonpie1985 - Hope your bro ok after shift last night?

Littlemadam - A very good point...let's hope it rains until your wedding day then it shines beautifully for you!

Redbaroness - Think I'll go and join in that discussion.
