O/T To party or not to party?

BoroKate, 8 January, 2010 at 16:13 Posted on Planning 0 17

Its my 30th birthday in April and I've already told everone I don't want a surprise party as I'm not particularly comfortable being the centre of attention. I still want to do something to celebrate with close friends and family though but not sure what.

I was thinking of a meal at a local restaurant - very easy to arrange but a bit unspectacular?

OR

A party at our house so I could invite a fair few more people. This would mean a lot more work for me & OH (not least cos we still have a full room that needs decorating).

Any thoughts to help me decide?

Party! You can go out for a meal for any birthday! ?

And with 3 months you have plenty of time to decorate!

I went on holiday for my 30th! ?

We did the same for D's 30th - though I got Vegas and he got Copenhagen. Was fab mind! I also did a party for him at home the weekend after. Made all the food myself - had 2 days off work to prepare!! Swore I would never do that again mind! ?

if you go down the party route you may be able to get family to help out. Or make big vats of curry or chilli or sometihng. Or have a BBQ ifthe weather's nice.

Is there a pub function room you could use? Some pubs let you hire out parts of the pub for free. I had a party back home once where as long as you spent a certain amount of the bar then you got the room and food for free. We ordered about £100's worth of catering and got it all for free ? Something like that would take the pressure away from you, and mean you could arrive at the party looking glam! ? Even trendy wine bar type places let you reserve areas of the pubs.

A function room is a nice idea, or an area of a pub - would mean a lot less work for you. Smiley smile

Hi everyone, thanks for the input. Im not keen on the idea of hiring a function room cos I don't think I could leave it to OH to organise. I love him to bits but he's got a terrible memory and would probably forget something major, like food, if I wasn't there to prompt him.

Im swaying more to the idea of a house party, that way I can keep it informal and get other people to help out so I don't feel a right saddo having to organise my own birthday party?

Also OH is on hol for 2 weeks beforehand so he can crack on with the decorating . . . under my strict supervision of course?

Do you really need to do the decorating??? Would anybody notice if it wasn't done??? Bearing in mind at any good party there is alcohol???

Haha, the room is currently being used as my sons playroom and has crayon all over one wall and 3 black gashes on another wall where OH dropped the tv so I think people may possibly notice?

It's my OH's birthday at the end of the month, i'm taking him on a surprise trip to Prague. I'm so excited! He hasn't got a clue, he suspects something, he keeps talking about going to a spa and a meal.

My OH doesn't want to be 30 and asked to disappear for his birthday! If you're happy about your birthday then party! However, i would have a nice relaxing meal on your birthday with OH and party on the weekend (unless your birthday is the weekend!).

Well it looks like its gonna be party time in my house? My birthday is on a Thursday so will go out for a meal with OH on the night then we'll have the party on the Friday night.

OH is gonna sort the food out cos he's a great cook and he's also gonna decorate on his hols . . . bless him. My brother will sort out the music cos he loves the cheesy party tunes, we'll attempt to make some cocktails and then bring out the Singstar once everyone's a bit tipsy!
