OT - trying for a baby? Coming off microgynon advice....

WhiteRose84, 26 April, 2011 at 11:03 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hey hitchers, can anyone advise please?

My OH and I have discussed the possibility of trying for a baby (obviously wedding planning isn't enough lol). I would need to come off microgynon. Do I need to see the doctor for advice or let them know?

Sorry for the daft questions, I'm new to all this! ? (can't ask family for advice because we want to keep it secret) ️?️ xxx

TIA

It's best to speak to your dr if you've been on it for ages as they may prefer to wean you off it slowly rather than you just stop taking it.

I fell pregnant whilst taking Microgynon though!!

I was on it for 6 years and came off without speaking to the doctor and it was fine but maybe I was being naive, it can't hurt to speak to the doctor about it.

It then took me 6 months to fall pregnant with my Son.

You'll just stop the pill, well that's what I've done twice. Ideally stop after your pack runs out and you'll have your withdrawal bleed and then just need to see what happens with your cycles. If you post on BT you'll get loads of baby advice.

I'll do what Lynsey said - stop taking it at the end of a packet and give my body some time to see what happens.

Unless you have any underlying medical conditions, I don't believe you need to consult your doctor - just need to get on that folic acid ASAP as it takes 3 months to build up a good basis (if thats the right word) of the stuff.

I believe you're supposed to stop taking the pill and allow one 'natural' period before you start trying (ie 1 withdrawal bleed then 1 normal perod), it makes the dates easier to calculate.

And I'd echo the folic acid thing - get on it before you start trying.

The other thing you need to consider if you're trying for a honeymoon baby is malaria tablets - you're not supposed to conceive while you're taking them or for a couple of months after, I don't kow if that affects your plans.

Apologies for sounding dumb, but what is the folic acid for/supposed to do? xx

Folic acid is supposed to help while the baby's spine and central nervous system are forming. It's meant to reduce the risk of things like spina bifida.
