O/T - Working mums...................

*porsche*, 6 September, 2010 at 14:22 Posted on Planning 0 10

Just wondering what jobs people do while they have children at school. My little girl will start school next year and at the moment I work 9-5pm with an hours drive each way. Obviously I won't be able to do this as I will have to collect her from school and I don't want to put her in after school clubs.

How do you go about applying for a job, saying I only want to work 9-3pm and close to home. Do such jobs exist?

?

    Hello fellow Mummy,

Up until going on maternity leave with number 3 I was a working Mum. My little girl had only just started school so I worked Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm. Luckily my job was super flexible and I was already part time so could adjust my hours to fit.

Yes there are part time school hour jobs out there, how about thinking about working in a school?! If you do office work you could think about that. The only other thing to do is keep looking out for part time stuff.

Best of luck, it's lots of fun trying to juggle work and parenthood!

Oh the joys of being a working mum. I do my job because it works around my son and have done it since he was very little. Although it can be stressful at times. My partner says i am capable of so much more (bless him) but my job works around our son and therefore makes my life a little easier. It means i don't earn as much money but it's enough to help contribute to the running of our home and family.

Working in a school would be a great idea for you by the sounds of it.

There not too many jobs about unfortunatly. I do a few part time jobs.

I do some general admin for my husbands company, but there is really not enough work to keep me there. So I undertake about 6 other part time jobs, but some of them are very small, such as bit of basic bookkeeping for a couple of firms, but they only have me for a 4 hour session once a month.

I've also arranged with some other mums to do a babysitting rota, where wi'll look after each others children for a few hours after school. Its good for the kids too, as they get to play with their friends.

    Yep, its complex!

I've just left my job but I was working at the local hospital. They were very flexible with hours, about 80% of the department I worked in were working mums and worked hours round their children's school times. I know that other departments had flexible working hours too. So you could try your local health trust? x

Unfortunately, we don't have anyone local enough to help drop her off or pick her up and my h2b works longer hours than me, so will have to get my thinking cap on and hopefully get something sorted for this time next year.

If you work 9 - 5 now who looks after your daughter? I don't get why you wouldn't want to carry on working when she's in school.

I'm a teacher but I work about 40 mins from where I live, my girls go to a childminder at 7.30 who takes them to school and then to after school club until I pick them up usually between 5 and 6. They love it, they get to do all kinds of activities with other children, if they were at home they would probably just watch telly!

I gave up my job in social care to be at home with the kids during the day. I took on a bar job at night. But now i am a self employed Harris Tweed weaver. Means i now work from home as and when i am able, usually i do it after the kids have gone to bed. Or the odd day shift when H2B is at home.

Wedhead, I work a 4 day week and she goes to nursery at the minute but we always said I would take her and collect her from school when the time comes.

I've never said I don't want to carry on working when she's in school, hence this post asking what other people do / how they work it!
