Our inexpensive, "just-thrown-together" London wedding. Yeah, right!

Dakota, 24 January, 2012 at 22:02 Posted on Planning 0 9

A while ago I posted looking for advice on pubs in London for a casual, inexpensive, fun wedding on a Thursday afternoon in August 2012. We've booked a town hall in our borough to hold the ceremony so all we wanted was a nice pub for the reception, maybe somewhere pretty like Highgate or Islington, somewhere with a garden, where we can perhaps have a hog roast, a nice selection of ales, some wine...well, you get the idea.

I've now had a week of looking around for that mythical pub. Guess what? Lots of other couples want a wedding with the same vibe as us, the result of which we are accumulating an alarming number of "sorry, we're full til the end of 2012" emails. These are not venues with a killer view down the Thames that charge a £10,000 hire fee before you've even had a quote from the caterers. These are PUBS! What I've learned is that, at least in London, your wedding might look just thrown together with the style of Shoreditch Hipster slash Martha Stewart slash Nigella Lawson, but you'll still need to plan the crap out of it. Well. In. Advance.

I haven't given up though, because finally today I've had some positive news from two locations. Will still have to check them out, which will of course mean dragging the fiance along, because although he wants a say he's always dismayed that he actually has to leave the flat to organise our wedding (honestly, he's lovely though).

Fingers crossed we'll get a reception sorted and then I can come back and ask you knowledgable people where I can source cheap flowers in London if it's not Sunday (for Columbia Road Market)?

Best wishes to all!

    Good luck!

My mum bought the flowers to make my bouquet from M&S the day before the wedding... was pretty cheap although a bit of a risk.

Great idea with the venue idea - as long as you get in there first. Sounds like a popular option!

On the flowers front, what about a beautiful lavender bouquet? I live near to an organic lavendar farm in Croydon and am sure that you could purchase the bunch at a reasonable price and then get it bound with a pretty ribbon and pins.

Good luck! One of the great things about London is the number of pubs that you can hire for free / low minimum spend. That's what we're doing, and so the money that we had earmarked for a hire fee could then be used on the things that we didn't think we could afford (i.e. a photobooth!) x

This is what I originally wanted but was struggling to find somewhere and we've somehow ended up having a formal hotel wedding ? have you tried The Conservatory? Google it as I'm not sure of the name and can't remember exact location but they have a garden, room you can use and good price for food and drink too x

Thank you for all of your great suggestions. I'll feel better once we've booked somewhere, which should be in the next 10 days (fingers crossed).

Update: we saw seven pubs this weekend, but only two felt like they could work. We're adapting our ideas as we go, because there's never going to be a venue that ticks all the boxes. Does it have a garden? Yup. Is there adequate space inside if it rains? Nope. Will they do a hog roast? yup, for an extra £750. etc.

It's been a wonderful mission though. London has some absolutely stunning, charming pubs!
