Overwhelmed newbie....

redsunflower25, 16 January, 2013 at 12:26 Posted on Planning 0 18

Hello

Who knew my mind would be blown by a week of basic research…

So I find myself here looking for a bit of advice and guidance. We haven’t set a date yet as it’s only been a couple of weeks, I've just been doing a bit of research online but it’s so overwhelming!

We are both very private people and don’t want anything too big and fancy, to be really honest we only want our parents present which is my first dilemma… apart from a registry office where else could we wed?!!? I've suggested going away, Scotland is an option at the moment, we would like to visit, parents included but where do I start looking? Or just have a little ceremony somewhere and then go for a meal after, but where to have the ceremony apart from a church (I assume this will cost a lot and might be a bit daft for 6 people.)

We are in Sussex and wouldn't mind a bit of travelling but I haven’t a clue where to start looking, could someone please give me a starting point? As we want something small I'm struggling with ideas.

Any advice would be really helpful, thanks for taking the time to read.

Look at your local registry office online they normally have a list of places where you can marry. x

    Gretna have some great packages:

hopefully the link works! They do some small intimate packages for under 10 people.

    hope this helps? X

    Hi

It's worth looking at hotels with a wedding licence - we've photographed a couple of really intimate ceremonies and they're really lovely! Quite a few hotels have private dining rooms where a wedding can be held, so it's a nice size room for a small party.

Hope that helps a bit ?

    Congratulations! ?

I'd start with the local registry office, as already mentioned. They will have a list of approved venues where you can be married if you don't want a church or the registry office itself, and many places are likely to have a couple of 'room' options to cater for different numbers. If it's a different part of the country you're thinking of then the registry office website for that county will have the same info.

From what I've looked at on here, small weddings aren't unusual x

Hi, firstly congratulations on your engagement. Smiley smile

Lots and lots of places these days are licensed to hold civil ceremonies, I used to work at Naworth Castle, Cumbria which does them and it is stunning, lots of country houses etc. do them all over the country - I'm sure a google search will bring these up. If you ask your local registrars office they will be able to point you in the right direction of places that are available near to you.

Gretna Green is beautiful ( I only live 20 miles away from it!! ) and it is very intimate too, there is also a very nice 4star hotel there called Smiths which would do you a lovely meal and overnight stay.

    Thanks for all the replies!!

I've just looked at the Gretna Green link (thanks) I will show the OH this eve. I think he and my mum will love the bag pipes option!

We are near Brighton so Horsham could be an option, there are so many I just came over all silly and confused. Might see if I can pop into our registry office and pick their brains too. I'm sure they see people as confused as me on a daily basis ?

Thank you all for the congrats too!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. No matter how big or small, your wedding day will be special and wonderful. =) We would love to perhaps offer some starting point guidance or wedding planning assistance. Town Hall registry weddings can be lovely - the Marylebone Registry Office in central London for example has had numerous high profile weddings over the years to include Sir Paul McCartney, etc. Every Friday they have many ceremonies coming through their doors. I believe they provide an intimate wedding which doesn't feel conveyor belt like. Check out your local registry office, they will be of some assistance. Don't hesitate to drop us a line should you need some suggestions. We are here to help.

Somewhere in London might be good?

I think Marylebone Registry Office is supposed to be lovely and then you could do a bus tour, finishing with a lovely dinner somewhere.

A Hitcher did exactly this I think

If you believe in the. Church marriage vows, there is no reason you can't get married in church and it's not always that expensive. Although OH and I married abroad, we had NO guests and still had the full C of E service. It was funny when the vicar asked if anyone present knew any reason we couldn't marry, since there wasn't anyone there! Still, that service was an ideal blend of our own belief and our desire for intimacy. If you DO go to Scotland, you can be married anywhere by a minister, and I'd definitely investigate Gretna Green for very small venues where you can have what you want.

Unfortunately Marylebone registry office is actually closing for refurbishment this year (not sure if there will be an alternative temporary office) Westminster registrars will be marrying us and this was mentioned in the information we received.

Hi, I'm from a similar area to you, and a place called Jeremy's at Borde Hill Gardens sprung to mind. I think they are licensed for weddings and you could have a really nice, small intimate meal afterwards.

With a small ceremony you could do a super cute outdoor gazebo style thang? I've been to a lovely gazebo wedding with 12 guests although admittedly it wasn't in the UK so not sure of particular gazeboesque locations
