Own Makeup?

MrsMac2be, 10 December, 2010 at 12:35 Posted on Planning 0 28

Did anyone do their own make-up on their wedding day?

I think I am going to as I dont want to spend loads of money for someone else to do it if I dont like it and end up doing it myself anyway

I think I will definately have my Hollywood Lashes done as they will keep also for my honeymoon.

I think I would feel more confident in doing my own makeup - my cousin has offered to do it for me so i may have a trial to see what its like and take it from there, definitely having my lashes done prfoessionally.

Not weird at all - I can't stand anyone touching my face or head either - I can't even go to a hairdresser. I had a Clarins makeover once, it was horrible, she gave me beige eyes, pink lipstick and peachy cheeks - and the foundation was anbout 3 shades off too. Disgusting, and seeing as I am a goth/rocker type she had it completely wrong! Bring on the glitter and black eyeliner!

I'm doing my own make-up for the wedding, but I may have to brave a salon for eyelash extensions....

I'd prefer to do my own, but the cost of buying the make up outweights the savings in having someone come in to do it.

In reality if I bought a basecoat to use on the wedding day, i'd never use it again, same for Finishing pearls the Dior and Clinique stands always try to push.

That said I've not found anyone i'd even want to book a trial with yet let alone trust on the day!

I was going to have my make-up done professionally but my friend said she was taught to do her make-up on the Bobbi brown counter in John Lewis and her make-up looked beautiful on her wedding day. I've decided that even if I do look terrible, I can easily ask the photographer to airbrush the photos Smiley laugh

I was at a MAC counter yesterday and you can book in a bridal lesson which is an hour and a half for £50 and that's redeemable against products. With MAC, you won't get a huge amount for £50, but you could pick and choose alongside what you've already got. I think they do a chart for you, with a picture of a face on it, so you can see where she's put the stuff etc. Might be worth taking one of your BMs with you so that they can help you if you like.

Im quite into make up tanning etc...i do my own tan (the cheap St Moriz' stuff, does the job!) each week and my friends always comment on my make up on nights out - ive done make up for friends & family for weddings but Im too scared of going too 'heavy' on my make up on the day - I like my eyeliner! So Im having mine done by a local beautician who done my make up as a bridesmaid a few years ago - it looked great all day and I just think it will take a bit of pressure off me on the morning! Same with my hair - first time of having my hair 'done' was my trial a few weeks ago - i need a few clip in etensions and I'll be good to go - will have another hair trial done with my make up the day of my dress fitting so I can see everything together - that way if I want to change anything I can!

Why dont you have a trial, try doing it yourself, take pictures of both etc & take it from there?

I have bought the make-up from benefit and am having a friend of mine do it. I could probably do my own but don't want to, but on the other hand I don't want to have to pay a fortune for someone else to either. She has been taught how to do it properly so I have total faith in her.

I've ended up booking someone to do mine, after umming and ahhing about it for ages. I'm having a trial a couple of days beforehand so I'm hoping it'll be ok - otherwise I'm stuffed as I doubt I'll be able to find a selection of make up counters anywhere close!?

It was the heat and the fact that I'll hopefully have a tan by the day that finally tipped the balance for me. I normally go for a very light, natural look for my makeup and I'm quite pale so need a darker foundation the minute I get anywhere near the sun. As I won't have any idea of how much sun I'm likely to get until I'm there, it makes buying new make up nearly impossible so I figured it would be easier to find someone to do it. Also I'm hoping that by having it done professionally it may stay in place a little better in the heat and humidity - failing that, she's hanging around to do touch ups for the photos. Looking at it like that, it became a bit of a no-brainer for me!

Besides, I'm getting very little else that's traditional weddingy, so I figured I'd spoil myself! <spoilt princess icon needed!>

I wouldnt trust anyone to do my makeup fullstop never mind on my wedding day, but only because i know exactly what i like and what suits my skin etc. If youre not so confident its defo worth getting someone in tho. You can have a trial run well before the day and theyre usually a bit cheaper i think? So if you dont like it you dont have the dissappointment. Another option some friends have done is to go to the makeup counters, get them to have a play and then you know what you like and what products theyv used to recreate it in your own time xxx

This is pretty much how I felt! Initially I saw it as a way to save costs as most of the make-up artists round here are so expensive. But when I found the lady who is doing my hair can do make up and is actually really reasonable with her prices it made more sense to have her do it. I would have easily spent on make-up what I am on her, and although I would have been able to keep I wouldn't have used most of it again!

I did my own and am glad that I did. I've never like my make up when someone else has done it for me as I really like it a particular way especially my eyes. I went to a make up counter and had a full make over done, went shopping for a few hours and checked how it looked after settling onto my skin and was really happy so went and bought most of the range. It was expensive, but I wear the make up every day and I was running low on quite a few things anyway so to me, it was more like topping up what I was running out of IYSWIM.

You could try and have a trial somewhere and see what you think, but before doing that, maybe you could try out some different looks on yourself first and see how you get on

Hi, I did my own make up. I couldnt justify spending loads on someone to it for me. I had a few trials but no one got it how i wanted so decided to do myself.

I know what your thinking (I know your closeby to where I live) but sadly won't be in Wycombe or Milton Keynes - I'll be in West Midlands (Walsall area) on the day. There seems to be a lot of posts on here about trying to find someone in the area so think there may be a shortage of decent make up people there!

I'm doing my own and using bare minerals make-up. We have a shop in St ALbans, but they are in most department stores now too. They are great and will spend ages teaching you how to do it and use all their products. And they dont charge at all. The products pretty much sell themselves though. I've bought everything I need!

They are really helpful. I bought my mum and eyelining kit as shes rubbish at eyeliner, and they've said if she still struggles she can pop into the shop and they'll go through it with her until she gets it!

@ Trickers - perhaps you should give her the idea of relocating to Walsall for the summer! ?

Ok, I have given in *serious arm twisting* and have contacted Rochelle O'Brien with regards to the wedding day make up... I will see how the trial goes and if still unsure then I may still end up doing it myself.

For me it's not about the money, it's about the result, and I wouldn't be happy having someone else doing my make-up. And besides, I can do make-up trials any weekend if I'm doing my own! And I won't be buying anything I wouldn't use ordinarily anyway, so the cost will be no more than I'd spend in a normal month (honest!)

I'm torn between the 2 at the moment and had a trial at Space NK last week and they were amazing!! I now have a list of products they used so can build them up slowly over the next few months if I decide to do it myself....although I also have a hair and make-up trial next month too so will make my decision then. Decisions.....

Can I give you girls a tip? Go onto Youtube and look at the make up tutorials, Lauren Luke does loads of various ones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjvM2GRx2HE Even if you aren't keen on the colours etc she has some great tips and brand advice.

I'll be doing my own.. only because I know a make up artist and she looks hellish - Wouldn't trust her to do mine!
