Painting tiles?? any good?

claires, 16 December, 2008 at 14:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

We are wanting to sell our house and we have a lot of 'colours' in our house that we think we ought to make a bit more neutral. I have small square tiles (probably about 3'' square) in the kitchen, as a chess board effect which are cream and a purply/aubergine colour. ie, one is cream, next one purple, etc. i have just read that back and realise it sounds vile but it actually does look nice!? anyhoo, my H wants to paint said purple tiles to a beigy/brown colour, using tile paint. I personally think its going to look painted and think we should just re-tile or leave it.

so.... has any one ever painted tiles, and if so, did it look a sod??

thanks

I know people who have painted tiles and it didn't look very good. It basically looked like tiles with paint over them!!

The tiles sound quite nice to me and if it goes with the other things you have, I wouldn't worry.

It doesn't look all that. I think painting every other tile would look worse too. How would you managed that?

    ?

Sorry haven't replied to your e-mail - was out all day yesterday, will do it now.

I don't think painting the tiles will be a good idea. You'll never get the same colour so you'd have to paint all of them. If the cupboards and the walls are plain I don't think the tiles would make much of a difference to a buyer to be honest.

If you're adamant about changing though I'd say re-tile the whole lot.

well, quite. i have no idea, he thinks it will work out cheaper, but i can see him doing it and having to re-tile over the mess anyway?

thanks RBH, i assumed it would look painted!

I haven't done it but have had a flat where the previous owner had done it and it looked crap. The tiles sound fine to me. What colour are the walls in the kitchen, could you make those more neutral instead?

My MIL used to paint the tiles in her shower with a mini roller, specifically used for tiles. They looked okay and I never knew they were painted until she told me. They were only painted white though and in a shower they won't be as noticable as they would in a kitchen.

Personally, I would leave the tiles, if they are in good condition. Tiles in a kitchen wouldn't put me off, especially if the rest of the kitchen was fine.

Thanks everyone. The kitchen is painted a cream colour so is neutral apart from the tiles. i think we will just leave it.

We painted the tiles in the kitchen as we hated the ones which were there but couldn't afford to re-tile the whole room. It was a complete pain in the arse and took about 6 coats before it started looking all the right colour without being streaky. Putting the paint on with a brush just didn't work, and we had to use a roller to get it even.

We had to get a 'grout pen' which was basically like a chunky felt tip with white paint in, which we used to go over where the grout was so it looked a bit more like tiles and less like tiles which had been painted. It looked pretty sh!t if I'm honest.

Painting every other tile would be a nightmare - don't do it!

Very quickly as I have to fly, but yes I've painted tiles and they looked fantastic - if I say so myself.

Bought 'International' paint - specifically for tiles. Little try and roller. Went on a dream, and looked stunning. All because I was having a party and I hated my kitchen tiles, so the night before said party, I painted them .. only took an hour (big kitchen!)

Wouldn't attempt odd tiles though. Lots of masking tape - too fiddly. Even though the paint I used was great, your scenario sounds like you should leave them.

No idea what it would look like as i've never tried it. However the sound of the colours is nice anyway, i think i'd be tempted to leave it.

    Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!

We ended up retiling our whole bathroom after attempting to paint the hideous black marble 'effect' tiles white. 4 coats of that 'International' tile paint and it still looked like shite ?

Your aubergine tiles sound really nice to me, certainly wouldn't put me off buying a house if there was a bit of colour in the kitchen. I mean if our bathroom as it was didn't put me off then I can't imagine what would ?

Maybe it was the speed with which I applied it, plus the fact I'd masked the edges and lifted all the power-points out of their brackets, so I didn't have to go slowly around the edges. Maybe that was key? The preparation.

I do know I was short of time, and if I didn't do it there and then I wouldn't have been able to do it at all. Even the caterers commented on how great it looked (they were there when I was deliberating about the tiles and how I hated them, and they were telling me how only a woman would worry about stuff like that [they were all men lol])

Right, I really, really need to go now. Please no more talk of painting tiles. It's far more interesting than getting in the shower!

Painting tiles can work if prepped well, but it may look painted and wear over time. Re-tiling gives a better finish, especially for selling. If you're in Bristol, Painter and Decorator Bristol can help with expert advice and a professional touch/
