Panic buying petrol

Roobarb, 21 April, 2008 at 13:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 71

Do these numpties not comprehend that they are CAUSING the potential fuel shortage?

They've just shown a clip of some stupid woman on the news saying "I filled up with £30 this morning, but I've just decided to top up again this afternoon as I was passing" - WTF?

You don't need to tell me. H just called, he was popping to Morrisons for some petrol on his way to work, forgetting about the strike and he's raging. There was a massive queue all the way off the forecourt and into the road so they're also blocking traffic. Feckless idiots.

The stupid thing is, we're going to need to go and fill up now for the gigs at weekend because these divvys are going to cause the stations to run out before the end of the week. WANKERS!!!

Nope, and they didn't the last time it happened either.

The last mini petrol crisis we had was all down to people panic buying when there was nothing to panic about. I stood my ground and said i wasn't going to fill up any earlier than normal, and wasn't going to add to the panic buying. But when I needed to fill up I couldn't find any petrol anywhere and had to take a day off work as I couldn't get in!?

Next we'll have the rumours that hauliers are running low too, so everyone can start panic buying bread and milk.

Is panic buying happening all over the country or just in the North of England/Scotland?

I think it's just Scotland and the North of England, as it's the refinery at Grangemouth that's going on strike for 2 days this week. But you never know, it could lead to the rest of the UK getting worried that we'll be getting petrol meant for them, and it could spread...

    ? @ P&P - so true.

Oh fecking hell, are we doing this again? My car needs petrol but I haven't driven today because it's got a puncture - planning to put the spare on and pop into Kwikfit at lunch tomorrow, is there going to be any point? I'll need to get petrol on the way home if I do that as I have hardly any [V]

It was the same when there was a potential water shortage in Gloucestershire due to the floods last year - panic buying of water even though there were pleas to just buy / take what you need and return another day.

What made me laugh were friends who condemned this behaviour of others, then rushed to do 3 loads of washing despite the fact we'd all been asked to conserve the water we did have.

I'm in the Midlands, should I be worried? I walk to work but if everyone does that the pavements might be getting more worn than usual, where can I buy tarmac ?

Honestly... Why don't people keep personal strategic reserves of essential commodities close at hand?

    Fuel and essential foodstuffs.

Eh? I didn't even realise there were potential supply problems!

Luckily I filled up my car yesterday because it was almost empty - I did think the garage was a bit busy!?

I'm in the North West and I vaguely remember something on the news about this, but I'm not going to panic buy!

People can be so dense! It's like when I went to tesco on the Saturday of the Easter weekend and there was nothing left! No veg, no meat, no milk! It was ridiculous! The store was closed for 1 day! that was it! It opened again on the Monday. It's the same at Christmas! And again, our tesco is closed for 1 day!!!!!

    Idiots!

You may scoff, but my Granny had a cupboard full of all bran, prunes and shiny lavatory paper in case there was a war. I think she kept cans of petrol in the coal bunker at one point. I'm sure she'd applaud ONE's caution. Better safe than sorry!

My ex was like this. He used to keep a survival kit underneath the bed full of all sorts of random things like water purifying tablets. He filled up empty squash/coke/juice bottles with tap water and hid them at the back of just about every cupboard. He was in Sainsburys on the day the second Gulf war kicked off buying 5 litre bottles of water to add to his stash.
You would think we lived on some remote island miles from civilisation, not the Surrey commuter belt.

I didn't realise there was going to be a strike either, however I'm miles away and I don't think it'll affect us.

Unless I should go and fill up with petrol now just in case the strike makes us run out in Guernsey!

And there was me thinking yesterdays 20 minute jam to get into Tesco was caused by everyone deciding at the same time to use up their 5p off fuel vouchers.

Honestly, it was nuts, I was only trying to do my weekly shop, and this was at 7pm.

I was busy laughing at the numpties thinking they had to use their money off vouchers this weekend when they're valid for a week. Little did I know.

I shall be most annoyed if, when I need petrol tomorrow or the day after, the local garages have slapped on an extra few pence per litre because of panic-buying muppetry. [V]

Argh feck I didn't know there is a strike. I live in the north and currently have 8 miles worth of petrol in my tank which means I'm going to have to queue with the panic buyers otherwise I can't go no where.

I'm really cross. I'm actually about to run out of petrol and apparently my local petrol station is dry already because of panic buying retired people. Fcuking brilliant.

While I agree 'panic' buying is nuts, why are some of you so different?

Surely you were all at the garage for the same reason - how do you know whether other customers were 'panic' buying or just happened to need petrol?

Same as supermarkets - surely everyone goes there to buy stuff - why is it panic buying?

It was quite clearly panic buying in dundee today because I fill my tank up every monday at the same time as I go to tesco for my work every Monday. And today the place was queued back, and totally chockablock. It never is - I go at eleven on a Monday morning! I couldn't believe it. I went to a garage just outside of Dundee and it was normal there, but I can bet you the Tesco ones will be empty really soon. Don't people listen to the news and the warnings to not panic buy?
