Party Food Help Please

HappyGirl, 25 October, 2008 at 18:13 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

Hi there,

Next weekend I am having an open house party for family and godparents of my LO - there will be about 18 adults and 6 children.

I have opted for open house as there is no way I could seat or serve up a meal for all of them at the same time.

As it is over lunch time and it is a Sunday I want to do something hot - that can sit on the hob and be dished out when everyone wants it (hopefully at different times throughout the afternoon). There is enough seating for about 8 but if everyone turns up at the same time which I bet they will some will have to perch on the sofa. So the food needs to be easy to keep and easy to eat.

I am kinda thinking of Jacket potatoes - that can just sit in the oven cooked on a low heat and then maybe a chicken and veg currie (mild) and a beef casserole and then maybe some sausages and beans for the kids (all under 5). We have no veggies

What do you think? or am I missing something that could be a lot easier? I did think about a chilli instead of the beef casserole but then thought maybe 2 spicy dishes would be too much. Maybe I should be doing 3 dishes?

I am not doing a cold buffet or nibbles as I have already told people there will be a hot meal.

Any thoughts very welcome

Thanks

We did similar for 40 people. Do you acces to slow cookers? We have 6 of the large oval ones between our family and the are fab on low to keep things warm.

We made the curries etc and froze them in the days running up to it.

We did spuds, rice, boiled new spuds & garlic bread to go with:

    lasagne

    sweet & sour chicken

    beef in red wine

    curry

    chili

Can I ask how you kept the rice nice? mine always seems to go like a thick gunk after 5 mins

I was going to do something similar for my son's party tomorrow (changed my mind in the end and am just doing finger food) but anyway I thought I could do a big tray bake of sausages and roast veg, then serve it with baguette/salad/sauce so people could make their own sausage sarnies/hotdogs.
