Passport change?

SuperSpud, 27 September, 2010 at 09:16 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hello,

This sounds silly, but I'm having a debate with my OH about changing my passport - I will be taking his surname next October. I would like to have my name changed on my passport before our honeymoon, rather than travel under my maiden name.

However, OH would prefer me to travel under my 'old' passport because he's worried that the Passport Office might "muck up" (his words) and I wouldn't get my new passport in time.

Has anyone here changed their passport before their wedding? Is it straight forward? I'm thinking we only get married in October next year, so that should be plently of time.

IMO - Its not straight forward - so we booked honeymoon in my maiden name,

If you want to do it: You have to get your registra to sign paper to say that the marriage will go ahead but the forms can only be signed either 3 or 6 months before the wedding - can't remember the detail there.

Then you send off - so if it were me i'd send off 8 weeks early as they guarentee a passport will be back in 6 weeks if a new one, or 2 weeks if renewing / changing details. They then charge you the £100 for a complete new passport and post date it so it cant be used before the wedding.

I've not it done it because anything could happen which means I might need my passport in the 6 weeks between hopefully getting it back and then the honeymoon and i'd have no passport to travel on.

OHs stag do might be abroad, my family are going away, work might send me away - i know its highly unlikely but if anythnig happened while my family were away and they needed me, i wouldnt be able to go.

So it's more of a personal circumstance choice for me.

I changed mine before our wedding, and it was fine. You have to get the form signed in advance, and then the new passport isn't valid until the wedding date, but apart from that it was pretty straight forward.

I changed mine before because my passport expired a couple of months after the wedding and I needed 6 months on it to travel.

You can send the forms away 3 months before the wedding, and then I paid the £8 check and send which means it generally only takes 2 weeks for it to come back. The registrar sent my forms back to me within a week so I had my new passport with 2 months to spare!

Im in the same mind really.. I only renewed mine last year so i have aaaages left on it but i cant bear the tought of travellign for the next 10 years in my maiden name.. I looked in to it and its straight forward..

you just print off the form online, get ur vicar/registra to sign it.. send it with 71 pounds (i think thats how much it said) and send it off!

I just changed mine a few days ago!

    SO ANNOYING!!

Were possibly going to florida on thursday for 3 weeks as a last minute thing. I only renewed my passport in January that was about £70 and ive just had to pay £129 to have my name changed on my new one and £10 on new photos! I needed mine done same day so had to go to my nearest passport office and pay and wait 4 hours. Im glad its done now because im ready to fly if we go.

If we dont, i will dead annoyed i paid £129 to have it done same day instead of £70ish!

Such a rip off if you ask me! They should take into account i only renewed 9months ago if that! Grrr

I personally wouldnt change mine until after the wedding incase you need it in an emergency but its personal choice.

It's quite easy to do and I got mine very quickly so it is now waiting for me to use. My old passport expired in January so I deliberately delayed applying for one until I could in my married name as I won't need to use it until after the wedding. If my old passport hadn;t expired I would have used that.

Basically, whatever name you book the ticket in needs to mtach the name in your passport so remember that when booking your holiday!

Why didn't you just travel in your maiden name then Natty? As far as I understood it, it doesn't matter what your name is on your passport as long as it matched the name on the tickets?

Sorry, I realise that's of no use now though!
