Passport Change of Name

charliebucket, 16 May, 2012 at 23:46 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi Smiley smile

So honeymoon is booked already and I would really love to travel under my married name. I have read that you can apply for a new passport upto 3 months before and have it done in your new name but cannot use it untill the day of the wedding (which is fine as we have 5 days between the wedding and honeymoon) Just wondering if anyone else has considered this or if anyone has any thoughts or advice on this.

Thanks C xx

How long do you have left on your current passport, as it isn't a cheap option! My passport was due to expire whilst we are honeymoon, so I applied for one under my married name. Only took a couple of weeks. You just have to decide if you want to spend £70+ on a new passport, or wait until your current one expires. Don't forget, the name you have booked your honeymoon under needs to match your passport!

We have just used our old names to book the honeymoon under. The idea of having our married name would be awesome but it's just not practical or cheap!

Thanks for your replies Smiley smile

My passport will have a year left on it when we go on honeymoon so I wont loose too much on it but like you said about names needing to match what our honeymoon is booked under (my maiden name) and not sure what it would cost to change this.

I thought any time you had remaining was transferred to your new passport? Could be confused with something else.

But yes, WSS- name on honeymoon booking needs to be married name too & airlines charge an arm & a leg to change names these days ☹️

Hi I looked at doing this, you can transfere up to 7 months i think from an old passport but you need to get a form signed from whoever is marrying you sayign that you are gettign married and it will only be valid once you are actually married, I would phone the passport office as that is what I did and they where very helpful about the whole thing. Hope this has helped.

I'll have 8years on my passport, so won't be changing it.

Think the £70 odd quid is an effing joke though. Bast*rds.

My passport is still valid to 2019!! Not sure if I can justify paying for a new one, although we're not going on honeymoon until next year so I have some time to think about it.

When I renewed it last time in 2008 (as I'd run out of empty pages!), I was able to carry forward 9 months, so if you've only got a year left you're not going to lose very much by changing it in time for your honeymoon.

I have about 8 years left on mine so I was just going to leave it and get my moneys worth as I'm what you'd call a penny pincher!

Although when I said this to OH (thinking he was happy that I was saving money) he was really upset and couldn't bear me being Miss Ford for another 8 years! So he's said whether I like it or not, he will pay for my new one after the wedding. (I like it by the way ?)

But I will still be travelling on honeymoon as Miss Ford as we have booked with that name and it's going to cost a ridiculous amount to change it.

    Me too!

One thing I would advise you check - what name is the honeymoon booked in? The name on your flight tickets and passport need to match I think, or your flight tickets need to be reissued with the new name on and some agents charge a fee for this. When I gave my TA my passport and booked our honeymoon, she was very clear that whatever name I booked the trip in, was the name I had to travel in.

I still havent changed mypassport, Ive been married 8 months and we go on holiday again in 3 weeks and will still be in my maiden name. I'm not bothering till it runs out! Its £90 better in my pocket I think.
