Passport - Dithering!

Alipops1986, 20 February, 2013 at 10:01 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hello All,

I'm dithering about my passport, it expires in February 2014 - we're going to Italy this summer for our Honeymoon, 3 days after our wedding in August - i'll have just under 6 months left on my passport.

I've read previous posts about travelling in maiden names which I was going to do but now, as it's so close to expiring anyway i'm contemplating getting a new one in my married name before we travel. We haven't paid for the honeymoon in full yet so I can still change my name to my married one.

My concern is whether i'll get the passport back in time, with it being summer. Therefore, is it possible to get the Vicar [we meet him in 2 weeks] to sign the form there and then, but me not actually send it off until 3 months before the wedding? Or, do they not sign it until 3 months before the wedding? Being a slight control freak, having it all ready to go and then just need to send it off in May would ease my nerves!

Thanks,

Alipops x

Can you not just ask the vicar to sign it 3 months before your wedding???

Although I don't see why it would be a problem if he signed it now...

My passport just came back in 5 days, though I did the online app and then they send the forms to you mostly completed, so that helps. 3 months is ample, just make the appointment with the vicar at exactly that point, and have your online app done around the same time and you'll have no problem. Will be lovely to travel in your married name!

You also have the option to pay for the fast track service which is 7 day turnaround I think. Although I'm pretty sure if you sent it in May you would get it back by August.

I'd look at getting a new passport since it so close to expiring anyway.

Also, I'm not sure about Italy but my understanding is that some countries require you to have 6 months left on a valid passport at the time of returning from your travels so you might want to check this out.

From memory the passport website recommends you leave 6 weeks to get your passport back so 3 months should give you plenty of time!
