Passport for Giving Notice?

MAG2FMC, 23 May, 2012 at 16:39 Posted on Planning 0 6

Right, so we're getting together our papers to give notice, ring up the registrar to make sure we're sending the documents to the right address, and she mentions that we need include copies of our passports. Now, I can sort of understand why she might need mine since I'm not a British citizen, but why would she need my OH's who is a British citizen (and told her so)? Why wouldn't his birth certificate suffice? I imagine there are Brits who don't have passports and that's certainly an expensive purchase if you're getting one just for giving notice!

I think I found the answer to my own question (which isn't explained on our registry's website and for which a passport is not listed as required): a birth certificate isn't evidence of nationality or name.

Apparently if you don't have a passport you can use other photographic identification(s). Passports are just simplest and so the registrar often doesn't initially offer up the other ones.

Does Scotland differ for this stuff?

We didnt need our passports to give notice, I went on my own, and I gave notice at the registry we are getting married in, not the one we live in.

Sorry to hijack the post with my questions, just realised this is another thing that contradicts what we have done.

I don't know what the exact rules for Scotland are, but they differ from England/Wales a fair bit when it comes to marriages, so it's quite feasible their document requirements are different. If you did what you were told to, then there's unlikely to be a problem!
