Passport problems

Bookish, 13 August, 2013 at 21:47 Posted on Planning 0 14

My passport expires May of 2014. I'm getting married in August and would like to go on honeymoon immediately afterwards.

I'm a bit confused as to what to do and I'm wondering if anyone can help. If I renew in my name I'll have to pay 72(!!!!!!) to renew and then another 72 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) a few months after to change my name to my married name. I don't really want my maiden name on my passport for another ten years but I'm also a tight sod and resent parting with that much money for such a small amendment.

My other option is to allow my passport to expire and then apply for a new passport in my married name. I know you can change the name on your passport 3 months before the wedding if you have confirmation from the registrar.

I suppose my question is can you apply for a brand new passport in your married name before the wedding if your old one has expired?

Sorry if I rambled!

Yes. When you apply for a new passport in your new name you surrender your current passport evn though new one is not valid until the date of your wedding. In your case it wouldn't matter as it will have expired anyway.

I think what you do is get the registrar's office to sign something to say you are due to be married on your date & that's sent off with your application.

You can change it upto 3 months before but it won't be valid till the wedding day and you current passport is invalid once you change the name. There is a form on the passports website that you print off then both you and the registrar fill in and sign different parts then post it off with your application form.

Unless you need to travel in June or July I'd just apply for a new one in your new name at the end of may when your current one expires. If you are planning an overseas hen make sure it is before you send off the old passport!

I would just go in person and sort it out in May 2014 and put your married name on it with confirmation from the registrar (I think that's 3 months right?!). It gives you a bigger window than waiting until just after your wedding, you don't want to book your honeymoon and then have that stress to deal with.

Thanks ladies, some good advice as always!

I don't think my hen will be abroad do that's not an issue. I think getting it sorted out before the wedding is the best option.

Does anyone else get sad at the thought of handing over their old passport? It has so many pretty stamps from all of the places I've been to. I always get excited when leaving the EU that I'm going to get a new stamp. Sad I know!

I've literally just done this! I get married in October and my passport doesn't expire until August next year, but I wanted to go away on honeymoon with my married name and so have just paid for it to be renewed with my married name! Doesn't become valid until the day of the wedding, but I just got my vicar to sign it and sent it off! You also get your old passport back with the corner cut off, so you get to keep all the pretty stamps!!

Mine expires 2 weeks after we get married. I am just going to renew in Maiden name this October (9 months before expiry) as I can't be bothered with the whole registrar thing. Would prefer to pay that ridiculous £72 this side of xmas than three months before our big day when we are trying to pay everything else.

Mine doesn't expire until September but I get married in May.However, most places require you to have at least 6 months validity on your passport to enter the country so I am changing mine before the wedding. I got a little bit freaked out booking our honeymoon in my married name last night!

To anyone who got their passport signed by the registrar - was it easy? Did you just do it when giving notice 3 months before?

Was going to ring them tomorrow to check. Thanks.

You probably know this but just in case - if you choose to renew your passport in your married name, make sure you're booked to fly in your married name - I know when we were looking at flights (not booked yet) they said you needed to make sure that you were booked under the name you were going to travel in or you'd need to change your booking - not sure if this applies to every airline/holiday but worth checking.

Yeah my best friend used to work for an airline and told me about how frequently that happens and stops people from flying. I won't be making that mistake!

You just send the form to them and them they send it off to the passport office. I had to get mine changed as it was due to run out 10months after we got married anyway.

my new passport is kind of nice as its valid from our wedding day. Plus the 10 months 'spare' I had on the old one are added onto this new one so its actually valid for nearly 11 years.

You were right on the limit there though Mini in fact, I thought the most they gave you was nine months extra. For example my wedding is next week but I had until May 2015 left on my old passport but my new one expires May 2024.
