Passports - Apply for one in two names?

majix, 17 January, 2009 at 11:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Morning!

Apologies, because i'm sure this has been answered before, but have tried a few different search terms and can't find anything!

Is it still possible (I know it used to be) for me to hold a UK passport that shows two names (an also known as)? I'm married now, and for all non work related things have changed my name. However for work i'm still known as my maiden name, and do not see that changing in the forseeable future. For travelling etc i therefore need my passport in two different names if this is still possible.

I've perused the FAQ's on the passport office website and looked over the application form and notes but can't find an answer. Haven't managed to get through to the telephone helpline, but thought that there was BOUND to be someone on hitched who knew the answer Smiley laugh

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

Do you mean holding 2 passports or one passport with both your maiden name & married not a double barrelled name??

It certainly used to be possible to have two names in your passport.

It said something like....Jane Smith AKA Jane Jones. However, I'm not sure if that is still possible. The helpline might be your best bet.

It has to be in one name I think but you can have a note added to the back page to say that this person is also known as X. However I think you still have to travel under the main name.

Aaaaw Michpuss, I understand now, sorry majix I got completley confused there?

Anyway, I work for the passport office (have done for almost a year) and I've never heard of this tbh.

I'm on maternity leave at the moment so I can't check on our systems etc for you, but I don't think its possible anymore. If you can't get through to the helpline, then you could email them using this section of the website

    https://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/ContactForms/contact-general.aspx

They have to respond within 4 working hours of the enquiry being recieved so you'll get a deffinate answer today.

Why do you need the passport to be in two names? My passport is in my maiden name, as that's the name I'm known as in Australia, but everything in the UK is in my married name. It has never been a problem.

    No problem, majix.

Sorry I couldn't give you a deffinate answer on the subject though, but without access to our systems etc I'd hate to hazard a guess on the subject!

Though what Hazel said sort of makes sense, people who want their title included on their passport do this.

Say, for example, a Dr decides s/he wants the title of Dr on their passport (however as you all know titles are not generally included on passports) so in a case like this the applicant needs to submit a letter along with the application stating they would like their title included on the passport and proof of their right to that title. The title is then included on the last page just after the photograph page.

This may be a possablilty, but as I say I can't answer this 100%.

Let me know what they say, cos I'll not be back to work until next January and will have forgotten to check on it by then.

You can, as Hazel says, get a note in your passport that the holder is also known by another name, but names on travel documents and passports still have to match. It's definitely worth getting the other name put in if you still use it, although this can only be done when getting a new passport.

I'm in a similar situation to you, and also have to travel for work. I've found it isn't a problem as long as you let the person booking the flight knows that the name on your passport is X - after all, lots of people use a name that isn't the same as the one on their passport (e.g. people going by their second Christian name). It can potentially get sticky if you are having to get visas though (that's where the note on the passport can be useful).

Yes, tell them you want it endorsed also known as - they put this on the back page. My uk passport renewed in 2007 is in Bostongirl Marriedname, endorsed as AKA Bostongirl Maidenname. Have had tickets booked in both names and no problems.

If you have any probs, drop me a pm and I'll dig out the email I have from the passport office telling me what to write on the form
