pasta making - flour?

Gone With The Whinge, 26 February, 2009 at 20:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Have just realised, while watching Masterchef, that I have never made pasta. A quick google tells me I don't need a machine as such, but I'm a bit confused as to what kind of flour I can use; 'very strong' stuff, apparently. Will bread flour do? Can anyone reccomend a flour?

Thanks.

Probably not much help as I can't remember it's name but I know that pasta flour name is a 'number'

If that makes any sense I'll be surprised!

    WTimoteiS

Type OO is a very fine flour. Also I would recommend a pasta machine as well as it is diffifult to get really thin otherwise.

I make my own pasta regularly and you need durum wheat flour, its available at most (if not all) supermarkets and actually sometimes it comes under the cunning disguise of 'pasta flour' lol

Home made pasta is lovely! I do have a pasta machine though as rolling the stuff out forever takes an age to get it thin enough to cut into strips (and youll need lots of space on the kitchen worktop / table too) a pasta machine takes the effort out of it.

Flour, eggs a little olive oil and whatever flavourings you like (herbs, spinach, tomato etc) is all you need.

Tbh, you can make perfectly good pasta with normal flour, its better with 00 but you can use normal plain flour. A machine is a total must though, you just can't do it otherwise! Good luck, its loads of fun!
