Paul Newman RIP

Mr JK, 27 September, 2008 at 15:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

No great surprise, as he was in his mid-eighties and widely rumoured to have terminal cancer, but it seems that Paul Newman died yesterday.

There's very little on this BBC news page as of the time of posting, but I suspect it'll be fleshed out rapidly over the next few hours.

Ah, that's made me sad. A fair actor, a generous human being and oh, those twinkling blue eyes. RIP.

That's sad. I always liked him too (think he was my first celebrity crush a million years ago). RIP.

God that's a shock, despite his age. One of those actors you could watch in anything and a good human being.

    R.I.P Butch. ?

I knew that he did a colossal amount for charity (and usually behind the scenes, with little fanfare - in fact, I heard he was considerably miffed when someone leaked that he'd donated a six-figure sum to Live Aid), but I've just found out that he's reckoned to have given away a greater proportion of his fortune to good causes than any other individual in America.

I also always liked his quip about being faithfully married to the same woman for half a century despite being one of the most lusted-after men in the world - "Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?"

In short, he was a truly admirable human being - in fact, it'll be interesting to see if anyone has a bad word to say about him in the next few days.

This is so sad. A lovely man and talented actor who did a huge amount for charity. I still fancied him into his 70's.
