I was talking to a friend earlier on and he was pissing himself whilst telling me that his company (a global technology firm) had issued a memo today to every worker around the world, that no employee should use the term "brainstorming" as people with epilepsy or similar may find it offensive. the term that should be used in its place (and this is not a joke) is "THOUGHT SHOWERS"

WTF? ?

I took an HNC in 2005 and we were told that we weren't allowed to use the term "brainstorming" for that very reason. Needless to say most of the students went on to call just about every activity brainstorming ? "Anyone coming out for a quick fag brainstorm" etc.

The phrase thought showers are commonly used in education (at least in my LEA) and it makes me cringe everytime I hear it.

I heard that one ages ago. If I thought brainstorming as a term was genuinely of great offence ot people with epilepsy then fair enough, but really, surely it cannot possibly be? Where is the prejudice, or the intention to denigate? It's just super silly.

I have suffered with epilepsy and I have to say I think this is ridiculous, and I am in no way offended by the use of 'brainstorming'.

We had a consultant who told us not to use the term too. ?

This is from the Epilepsy Action website:

"We are often asked about the word 'brainstorming' and whether its use is acceptable. Our view is that it depends upon the context: if the word is being used to describe a meeting where participants are suggesting ideas, then its use is not offensive to people with epilepsy. However, it should not be used to describe a seizure or the electrical activity within the brain during a seizure. "

Thought showers are a big buzzword at my Uni at the moment - we laugh about them when the lecturer has gone out of the room though ?

Well as someone who works in brain injury, where many patients suffer post traumatic epilepsy I can honestly say I've never known someone be offended by the term!

I was told about this at college, but they used cloud bursting instead ? (or slightly more sensible mind mapping)

Brainstorming is something we jump around to everyday - It'sa song sung on a children's programme on Playhouse Disney , Imagination Movers.

mechanical digger is another term , now it's classed as a road maintenace equipment.

Blimey, for once the world of Education is ahead of the game. Might know it's about something stupid. We were discouraged from using the word 'brainstorming' about 8 years ago - it must be this long because I was at my previous school. We favour 'mindmapping' these days which is slightly different and more useful anyway. Trouble is I can't do it as I don't have a sense of direction.

You beat me to it and have outdone me too as I was going to say I heard of this 5/6 years ago when I worked in stroke research. I also heard not long after that that it was apparently okay to use again.

Anyway, I should know, I'm PC Kaz ?

I have a mild form of epilepsy and this PC crap irritates me. To be fair I'm not disabled/afflicted in anyway. You'd never ever know I have it (although you do now!).
