People with kindles..*info please*

*MM3*, 20 October, 2013 at 17:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Hello all,

I'm looking for a kindle for my Mums Christmas prezzie, know someone posted about them not long ago and can't seem to find it.

She's not brilliant with technology takes her all her time to get used to working the laptop haha, so looking for one she can just get her books on and quite simple.

What ones would people recommend, and also how does it work downloading the books etc? Do you pay for them and is it easy enough to work getting them onto it?

Tried looking myself but got confused with all the different names for them and what ones are best!

Thanks.

It was me that posted! I was looking at them for my 8 year old. In the end I bought the kobo mini. It was on special for £29.99 the other week and met all our requirements. It's very simple to use, a nice size for carrying around. Only negative is it doesn't have a back light so he still needs the bedroom light on to read it. Otherwise it was excellent value for money if you just want a simple ereader.

I have a kindle fire- when you set it up , you set up your debit card with it so that if you want to pay to download books etc it automatically goes from your bank account, I love my kindle fire the only downside of it is you cant see a damn thing on it if the sun is bright- so hopless really if you go on holiday unless you sit in the shade all day..

I have a very basic Kindle, it's just an e-reader not a tablet, not backlit and only has wifi, not 3G. But I love it! I think I would get a Paperwhite now if I were buying again as that has the option to be lit up. The basic Kindle and I think the Paperwhite have matt screens so can be read in bright sunlight.

They're fairly easy to use once you get used to it. To buy books, you need to register the Kindle to an Amazon account which has a credit/debit card linked to it. Once you've done that, you just click the "shop in Kindle store" button on it, and you can browse or search for specific items, then when you click "buy" it downloads and charges your card automatically.

Very easy to get the book onto the kindle using Amazon's whispernet - I find it easier to browse amazon's website on my netbook, my kindle is linked to my account, I buy a book and once paid for it's delivered straight to my kindle Smiley smile

I have the old kinde, with the keyboard. My mum has the paperwhite version (touch screen) which tbh she struggles with. I prefer my version, but I don't think you can get it anymore.

I have a basic kindle too and can confirm it is fine to read in the sun, I just took it to Cyprus with me and it was great! V easy to use. My mum has the same one and she also finds it easy to use, including buying and downloading books. I really wasn't keen on the idea of them replacing books before I got one but now I'm a convert, I love it!

    Same here.

I have the big standard kindle and I love it.

I read a hell of a lot so it's perfect for me, means that I can store loads of books on it and not have to lug lots of books on holiday with me or on the tube etc.

Really easy to use. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have the basic Kindle, wifi only, no backlight. It's linked to my Amazon account so when I download books it just charges my debit card. If I was buying one now, I'd get the Paperwhite because it is a little schleppy having to clip on my mini light to read in bed.

I had the 1st one and loved it, simple to use and great in daylight. Last Christmas hubby bought me the paper light. I love it more for the touch screen and back light functions. I just download in seconds from Amazon

I also have a basic kindle and I love it though a backlight would be useful. It just works with my Amazon account so very easy to buy books

    That's great thanks everyone!
Will try and get just basic one I think or the next one up that has a backlight, although that's a maybe as she sometimes gets a sore head using laptop for too long so hoping the light wouldn't do the same ?
I'm not sure she'd take it out much other than the odd train journey it's mainly night time she reads but usually has bedside lamp on so wouldn't need anything fancy and the wifi would be fine with her. Going to get looking just now and hopefully purchase one and look into working them as i'll probably end up helping her with it haha.

    Thanks again everyone!

I have the basic one from when they first came out , but also the app on my ipad mini and iphone. I tend to only use the Kindle out doors and on holiday and the ipad in bed and the rest of the time. Great as they all sync to the same page.
