Perfume - tell me about yours

Moomoo, 5 January, 2009 at 17:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 45

I had a moment's fear about the respectability of my perfume after musings (by me) on a different thread ? and was moved to google some reviews - something i'd never done before. Do other people look at reviews on sites like basenotes.net (I just found a review of mine on there, I assume there are others of the same type) before they buy, or do you do as I do and go out for a good old sniff? plus an eventual squirt to see if it suits once the first test is passed?

So what do you wear, how did you choose it, and what do you think about it?

I'll start off. My perfume of choice is 24, Faubourg by Hermes. I first bought it before I got married when I was 22. It has something slightly restrained about it while being very obviously present which I felt reflected my personality ?. I also liked the fact it had orange blossom in it and I first wore it (not counting trials, of course ?) to my wedding. According to some people on basenotes, it's a bit of a 'grand dame' scent and not suitable for the under 35s. oh well ?

I still like it. Before that I used to wear Flore by Carolina Herera, and I have a Clarins thing - Eau Resourcante (sp?) for days when I want to feel calmed and particularly clean-smelling. I wore it all the time when I was almost made redundant a few years ago, it's surprising how much a sniff of one's own wrists can help you get through the day...

    Jo Malone Pomegranite noir

I went into Jo Malone after evryone raving about the Lime Basil one and I hated it. PN smelled lovely so I bought it. Its really distinctive as well, its the only perfume I can pick out on someone else.

I usually wear Shiseido or Anna Sui depending on my mood.

OH & I were bought matching Beckham kits for Christmas by his parents...good lord ?, there's just something about buying/wearing 'celeb' perfume that I don't like.

The bottle looks different (maybe usa?) but I think someone has said this about one I got for Christmas

Bought it for my Grandma. Think it is a, powdery, different, juvenile yet mature scent.
    It is also quite fresh.
Never smelt something like it, must be the Fresia.

Like it. But not for younger generations

    Great!

I read reviews sometimes but am not overly bothered by them. Ultimately it's a very personal choice, and perfume reacts differently on each person's skin. Perfume sites are good for discovering niche perfumes though, I'm not big on mainstream stuff.

I have mostly floral perfumes, a lot of rose ones but my most frequently used one is a custom perfume.

It wouldn't occur to me to read perfume reviews, but then I am not too bothered about other people's opinions on smells, it's a personal thing.

I just go out and have a good sniff. Before Christmas I decided I'd like a new smell and ha dbought some Lancome stuff recently so decided to try out what they had and went for Magnifique and Miracle, and am currently alternating these plus Nina by Nina Ricci.

I am a bit obssessive about having matching body washes, I don't like a scented body wash then a differently scented perfume.

When I was in my very early teens, I bought 'Vanilla Fields' from Boots. I remember my mother throwing it at me in disgust, saying it was repulsive and you could smell cleaning fluids underneath ? ah, the joys of childhood. It has a surprisingly non-condemnatory review on basenotes - I wonder if there was more than one by this name? If only I could remember the one she said smelt 'like a tart's boudoir'. I can picture the bottle now...

I don't stick to one perfume, I like the excitement of buying something completely new every 6 months or so.

I definitely wouldn't read a review of its smell - I love Calvin Klein's Obsession which my sister wears, but when I've tried it on me, it smells of peanuts ?

I am currently loving Agent Provocateur's Strip.

Gingey, I also checked out Jo Malone's perfumes after hearing everyone raving about them, but same thing, thought they smelled 'orrid!

I find most perfumes way too floral and have worn Ysatis for as long as I can remember. I've also worn Obsession, Organza indecence (till it was discontinued) and D&G Light blue for a lighter more summery option. I bought DKNY be delicious when I moved here as it was new and in an apple shaped bottle which I thought was appropriate although I hardly used it.

I keep looking for a new staple as Ysatis is a bit 80's but so far no sucess.

I wore CKbe (is that how you spell it?) 5 years or more ago. And then nothing. I am currently giving thought to Ralph Lauren's Notorious. The test I had of it was rather nice, and in an obviously shallow and glutton-for-the-marketing-people's-wiles kind of way, I adore the packaging.

Alien smells divine on my friend and like eau de (du?) crap on me.

Shalimar, there's another one i used to wear. i definitely was too young for that. and what happened to white lace? who made that? was it yardley?

i'm with you on the body wash, btw. and what about hair? there's no point having a lovely perfume if you have something rank on your hair.

oh, the torments. why don't they just do everything in matching sets, so you could smell completely of something. or more interesting unscented (de-scented?) products. hmm.

I've never read a review, in fact I had no idea they even existed ?

I have about 4 on the go and change with my mood. At the moment I love Prada (the original one), Narciso Rodriguez, Missoni and Coco Chanel. A client gave me the new Gucci one and I'm not sure about it really. I don't think it suits me.

A classic one that smelt vile on me was Tom Ford. It smelt like fly spray. My friend wears it and I love the smell on her.

I lurve Jo Malone. I think the lime and basil one is more for men though - it smells lovely on my H.

I like Pomegranate Noir, Nectarine Blossom and Honey, and Ginger and Nutmeg. I'd like a lot more of them but the budget ends there...

weird, isn't it? how different one perfume can smell on two people. white linen always smelt so fresh and lovely to me, but it's got some totally mixed reviews on that site.

i'd always assumed that there were perfume review sites in the same way that there must be tasting notes for wines online, but i can't say i'd looked before either. but there they were.

I like to wear fragrances that not many people in my circle wear. I like it to be that when they are away from me and maybe smell my fragrance on someone else, they say "oh I can smell Evy".

(Sad I know but it's just how I am!)

Sooooo, this year mr evy couldnt buy my annual fragrance as I didnot know what I'd like. I've been wearing Soir De Lune by Sisley, but then my best friend bought it and kind of started calling it "hers".

I also wear Narciso Rodriguez For Her, but only on special occasions.

I love Hippy Fizz by Moschino, Ralph Lauren's Romance, Clinique Happy, and many more.

This year I've been trying to source a fragrance that I wore years ago and i think it's discontinued! (o boticario)

During my research on what fragrance suits me, I've discovered that Jo Malone is pants on me (although i think you're supposed to layer) and I'm really keen to smell Bobby Brown's Bath. Also, I'd like a sniff at the Clean fragrances.

I'm actuallyexcited about having discovered Chloe Eau de Parfum which smells absolutely amazing on me and is how I'd like to be rememberd!

(you can tell I'm a fragrance saddo!) Oh! and according to all the perfume blogs, I'm a floral type (who would have known??)

I wear loads of different perfumes (not all at once i hasten to add!) i get bored if i always smell the same. i very much associate smells with times/places, anais anais just reminds me of my granny.

    at the moment i have

Lancome - Hypnose - love it for nights out

Dior addict reminds me of holiday

Ralph Lauren romance first wore it when a boyfriend bought me it for my 17th birthday reminds me of being at school!

and quite strangely britney's curious! my friend had it at my best friends wedding and we all wore it so we would smell the same when we walked down the aisle, just reminds me of that day now and i love it!

I like to have a couple of perfumes on the go so as to not get bored with wearing the same one all the time, at the moment I've got

    Romance by Ralph Lauren

Essence de Femme by Hugo Boss (not seen it around generally, i bought it in the duty free on the way home from France)

Also I like to have a bottle of Coco Mademoiselle on the go (i wore it for my wedding) but at the moment i'm all out (still it is valentine's day next month so you never know).

I also borrow Mr Dooby's West Indian Lime from Crabtree & Evelyn as it's gorgeous.

Over the past few months, I.ve been wearing Juicy Couture perfume, which I love and also 'Touch of Pink' by Lacoste.

    Previous favourite perfumes have been

Davidoff Cool Water Wave, Jean Paul Gaultier, Contradiction, Ralph Lauren -Romance (my wedding perfume), Hugo Boss Woman, Ralph Lauren Polo Sport (I really loved this one), Ghost

Earlier faves : Estee Lauder - Spellbound, Chanel No 5 (My mum wore this), CK One, Chloe 'Narcisse' - teenage fave

Prior to this(my earliest perfumes) - 'Dewberry' by the body shop and 'Exclamation'by Coty - I can remember the advert 'Make a statement without saying a word' ? I must have been about 11 or 12 years old

I think this is my life in perfumes, although I'm sure there have been loads more I've missed off.

Exclamation was my first scent, followed by a cheap copy of CK One.

I've been wearing Noa since I was 16 but have been converted to Dior Addict 2 (the original Addict was too sickly - esp after a night out - in the morning it made me want to heave!) and Miss Dior Cherie.

I like the idea of having a signature fragrance too

I'm currently wearing Princess by Vera Wang. Apparently it is quite an immature scent. I like it though and haven't noticed anyone else wearing it when I'm at work/out as yet.

I've worn Romance, Coco Madamoiselle, Allure, CK truth and Angel in the past.

I got Stella In Two for Christmas, which I'm trying to remember to wear throught the day, and I have Estee Lauder Beautiful Sheer which I wear for evenings or special occsions. Also I still have a bottle of CkOne which I sniff occassionally but never wear, but it takes me straight back to my first date with H 10 years ago

I would never even think about reading a review - perfume is so personal. But it takes me a long time to decide if I like a perfume. I have to go into Boots a few times and wander round after spraying the perfume, to work out if I think it uits me.

I choose mine dependant on what I am wearing/occasion.

Ralph Lauren 'Romance' - I wear when I am doing something nice with OH (I bought this first for our wedding day, so when I wear it I remember that lovely day)

DKNY 'Women' - wear normally going out, more casual. Its lovely and fresh.

DKNY 'Be Delicious' - a jeans/day to day perfume.

I have an Armani one I don't really like as much so I wear when I go to work normally!

I have a few in the bathroom at the mo:

Caroline Herrera 212 Sexy - really got to feel like having to smell like that all day lol!

Vera Wang Princess - bought by my H, quite sweet, again got to feel like it.

Stella McCartney - nice for every day wear but I wouldn't buy it again

Boss for Women - my favourite and one I buy more of, nice for day or evening and I never get tired of the smell.

i've never read reviews, I know what I like the smell of. I've had perfumes i've liked in the past that i've really grown to dislike (Chanel Contradiction/Cool Water for Women being two).

I wear Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir, Nectarine and Honey Blossom and Tuberose - not all together obviously, but as and when.

I saw lots of people talking about Jo Malone on here and so I went into a shop and smelt a few. I got the Nectarine and Honey Blossom for my wedding and the others later on.

I usually wear Hugo Woman, which I really like. Mr Caterpillar bought me a bottle of it when we went on holiday together in Rhodes 5 years ago, and he bought a men's Hugo Boss one for himself, so now when either of us wears it it makes me think of that holiday. I tend to ask for a new bottle every Christmas now! I like it because it's not too girly - which is pretty much what it says on Basenotes, apart from someone saying it smells "generic".

I was bought some perfume by my brother for Christmas (I think his girlfriend probably helped him choose actually) - it's called Delices de Cartier Eau Fruitee, which is kind of fruity smelling (mandarin, rhubarb, morello cherry according to basenotes).

I don't tend to look at reviews for perfume - I usually just try them on my skin.
