Lovely clear scan - the spine looks like a zip, one of those things you stuff your pjs in! Seriously though, beautiful. Hope the next 20 weeks go smoothly.

See I wouldn't want to find out but OH does so when it comes to having babies we will be in a slight predicament!

When the neural tube (which will become the spine) closes during development, we refer to the process as "zipping up". You're a developmental biologist and you don't know it!

You can see the structure running horizontally across the picture, "zipping up" from right (head end) to left (tail end). This tube being formed (as the tissue closes over the top) will contains the embryo's spinal cord.

Flow, I can really recommend the book A Child is Born by Lennart Nilsson (link)

It's largely a picture book of such amazingly detailed pictures of the developing baby, in fact the baby on the front cover is at 20 weeks and you can see fingernails and eyebrows and everything. It's a fascinating book which blows your mind as to how amazing conception and pregnancy is.
