Personalised glasses - any advice?!

MrsB2B2013, 4 March, 2012 at 20:13 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi all,

The OH and I are trying to think of memorable favours. We were at a wedding fayre recently and met a lady who paints guests names onto glasses (wine/champagne/shot), coasters, tealights etc. They looked amazing, and would be a really great gift / souvenir for all of our guests. The problem is that they are quite expensive (works out at £4.95pp for the Champagne glasses, which are our fave). SO I'm thinking of making them myself! Has anyone done this, or have any tips before I start?

Thanks Smiley smile

Rach

You can get cheap wine glasses from tesco for about a pound, then get some glass paints to do your design.

I am not foosey's friend but I have just finished doing this for our wedding in July. Glasses from Ikea, paints and tags from ebay, ribbon and charms from a local craft warehouse. They worked out about £1 each. I did it with 6 friends of an afternoon and then put on cake and bubbles to thank them!

It's REALLY straightforward however a little word of warning....make sure those painting the names have nice handwriting as standard and are creative types. I just re did 23 glasses that a friend did because they looked like a 5 year did them. I felt AWFUL about doing this but it would have been embarrassing as the others were just lovely. I'm a bad person I know.

We looked into doing glasses but decided against it due to the cost (although from the above thread it might still be an option although my OH would kill me lol)

Instead we bought glass coasters from B&M Homestore, cleaned off the printed design and I have used my dremel engraver to engrave a design.

I have also done glasses and its actually quite easy once you get a feel for the tool (ooh err missus). One tip which I always use it to print off the font you want, tack onto the inside of the glass the write on using perm pen. Then remove the paper, replace with black paper and then engrave over the pen. I do this to avoid the distortion you can get looking at the paper from angles, but if you are painting you wont need to do all these.

A dremel engraver is about £19 so not too bad in the scheme of things and handy for engraving belongings. One thing I will say is with engraving you need a dust mask, eye protection and water to clear dust away, and stop the glass overheating. Its quite technical but easy once you get the hang of it. Just be careful as glass dust isn't that good for you to inhale!

    Here is my sample:
