Pet Insurance

MrsM*LZ, 18 September, 2013 at 11:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

Lovely Otters, please talk to me about your pet insurance.

Our renewal has come through and has increased dramitically from £17 to £29 per month! This is due to a claim we made, however over the year we would have paid back more than we claimed. Obviously this is how they get their money back but do they really think people would stay with them when its such a big jump?

Please recommend me your insurers - there are so many types of policies i don't know which is best.

N.B. think our renewal covers lifelong illnesses but i don't fancy such increases each year! might as well stick money into an account and pay for it as necessary! (Tempting but worried in case it would ever run in to 000's!)

We pay £29 a month and we have never even claimed! I think its because our dog is a pedigree and apparently they are more prone to illnesses.

I think we may start doing this.

I couldn't get mine for less than £25.

If you move insurer you know you will not be covered for whatever you claimed for...

First thing I'd do is call your current insurer and moan, they might reduce it a bit.

Ah maybe i'm just tight! Haha! Toby is fully fledged pedigree Airedale so looks like i got a good deal for the first year then!

We claimed for eye tests he had - to tell us he had hayfever, lol! So nothing we would have to claim for again hopefully as in future, now we know, we can just get medicines if necessary.

Might give them a call and see what they can do.

I have petplan lifetime cover and it's £23 per month, but that is for two moggies. I am sure it will go up as I have had to claim for Joey this year.

I must say that so far (still waiting for another cheque), they have been brilliant. I've already had most of the money back from Joey's treatment and I only put the claim in end of August.

I've been meaning to change ours for the last 3 years but I just have't got around to it! We're with Direct Line and it costs about 17 quid each month for one cat, she's 9 and i think they put it up by a pound each year.

I'm with pet plan too. I've claimed twice in 3 years and it went up by 50p a month. Ours is about £22 a month. This is for a rescue Great Dane corss Doberman. They have been very good. We have lifetime cover and when I've claimed they pay up straight away I think I waited a week or two for the cheque in each case. I'll never change as Rosco has ,ild brain damage so other insurers wouldn't touch him. We are not covered for neurological conditions but thats to be expected.

I don't know specifics of your dog insurance, but that sounds much like our cat insurance (granted a smaller animal to insure) and we found John Lewis te cheapest by far for lifelong cover for any serious illnesses, so they may be worth a try as a comparison if nothing else

    I don't have pet insurance.

Despite one of my bunnies costing up over £10,000 at the vets alone in just 5 and a half years.

She was a severe dental disease bunny, no upper right molars, so because rabbits teeth continuously grow the bottom set had nothing to grind against - causing constant ulceration, discomfort and abscesses, besides insurers won't cover dentals in rabbits. She was also a respiratory bunny and we ended up buying a nebuliser for her. She did well though considering, but when rabbits live up to the age of 12 for her size (2.2kg) she lost so many years. If she was a giant bunny her age of 5.5years would have been a good age (giant breeds have the same size hat as smaller breeds, so much more strain on the heart due to size, hence shorter life span)

I remember when we made her very last vet visit, the vet was a referral, apparently the best in the country for rabbits..she said 'is your rabbit insured or the most expensive rabbit in the country?' Lola my bunny had 26 pages of vet notes ?.

I'd pay it all again though, if it meant she was still with me. Just a note, Lola's issues were genetic, she always had hay (80% of the diet) and like with most lops the face is 'squashed' and dental problems are common in this breed. ☹️

We're not fussed about insurance, we have money saved for the bunnies and Tinks (tortoise) if needed.

We pay £18.51 a month for Jasper. He is a pedigree German Shorthaired Pointer. Thats with pet plan and after a claim for an operation for a mass on his jaw.

We don't insure the moggies but put away £20 a month for them.

Thank you Jo ❤️, she was a massive part of mine and the O/Hs life, our first bunny (and pet) together, she had a hold on us both!

They never leave us, gone but never forgotten ❤️

My cat Bertie is just over £6 a month with direct line.

My mum uses Argos and pays about the same for her cat. Not sure how much it would be for dogs though.

I am with Tesco and they have been great with Tia's claim. They also have a free 24 hour 'vetphone' helpline so I can be a crazy paranoid cat mummy at 4am without taking her to the emergency vets. For 2 cats I pay £18 a month. It hasn't gone up over the last 2 years either.
