Petticoat help

BrainyBride, 30 December, 2011 at 10:59 Posted on Planning 0 3

Just wondered if anyone has bought a petticoat – looking for some help.

I have a vintage dress from the 50s, it has a high neckline and long sleeves, and the skirt comes to my ankles – slightly longer at the back than the front.

I’d like to try and give it more of an hour-glass shape, which I think means pouffing the skirt up a bit.

I don’t have any pictures of mine, but this dress is quite similar and I guess is the shape of the skirt I’m aiming for. Could anyone suggest what kind of petticoat I’d need? and also possibly somewhere cheap I might find one?! Also, do you think it’ll look weird when the hemline is quite assymetric? I'd like to have it when I next go to the seamstress so I can get her to do other alterations if they are necessary, but that means buying one now without seeing it again...

Can you not ask the seamstress to make you one that way you get it to match your dress (This is what i'm doing as i only want volume at the back to hold my train)

BrainyBride- I got mine from ebay was really cheap and has really good structure. Although mine was a full petticoat they did have listed they shorther ones for the 50's dresses and the sellers descriptions were really helpful to help you figure out what style best suits your dress. Let me look in my ebay accounts history and find the seller info / name for you.

Thank you both for the tips - bridalbutterfly that's really great to have the link, as I worry with ebay sellers that it's impossible to know the quality beforehand! But with the tip I will probably try them. Good suggestion on the seamstress too. I'm trying to keep costs down so I had hoped to go for something like the ebay route, but it's worth thinking about if I can't get anything that is right. I hadn't even considered asking for one to be made.
