Has any one used both or are having both for their wedding. Just wondered how that would work together.

Do you mean using one company which provides both photos and a DVD? Or do you just mean having both a photographer and a video at the wedding? Every wedding I have filmed at has also had a (seperate) photographer, and there have been no problems getting in eachother's way ?

usually I am in a fixed position during the service and try to be out of line of the photographer. During the photos, I wander around and film from different angles ?

Ebee, now that is the sensible way to film. I never understand when some videographers hand around filming us setting up and then taking groups shots..... there must be much more interesting stuff to film with the rest of the guests.

I have to say that it is generally fine having both. Whichever you book first it is worth asking if can suggest anyone they would suggest working with as videographers and photographers will know who they have worked will with before. Also let both parties know that you are having both and give them the option to get in touch with each other before hand if they want to (isn't generally necessary but nice to have the option).

We just do the photography http://www.pixcellence.co.uk), but we shoot a lot of Asian weddings and it is often the case that the brides side of the family hires a photographer and videographer and the grooms side also hires a different photographer and video guy. With the best will in the world it is difficult not to get in each others way! A good photographer will always work well with a videographer and knows that he has to walk behind him, in fatc the video guys often use very flattering lights which the photographers can 'steal' for some neat effects - as long as you all play nice.

I've worked with a number of videographers at weddings. At the end of the day we are all professionals and try to work with each other and not get in each others way, that said, it can happen, key is communiction.

The only two times I've ever had problems was were the video was actually three videographers all covering the bride and groom from three seperate angles, made it very difficult not to get in somebodies shot unless I was just photographing the back of the brides head!

The other time what I can only describe as a film crew turned up, there were 5 of them, 3 video's, 1 lighting technican and a director. Totally overkill! They set up lights everywhere which just kept getting in shot all the time. Too many cooks scenario. A videographer or even videographer assistant are usually fine. Just prioritise during the service who you want to have which positions.

We, as videographers, work fine with all professional photographers from Hello magazine down (or up depending on your point of view). Working well together brings out the best in both. ?
I think there can be problems when one is inexperienced and their enthusiasm overrides their awareness of proceedings.
    Hope this helps.?

I have to second other posts. As a photographer, [www.photographybyriddell.co.uk] I too have worked numerous times with videographers. As professionals we all get along, we both know we have a job to do, and you'll find us both being curteous to each other. We both know where to go and how to stand, so we arn't spoiling each other shots. A kind of unwritten body language exists that we all understand, so as we can both get the best shots. Its experience really.

The only problems that have ever occurred is when working with a unprofessional / inexperienced videographer, and unfortuantly that can include a zealous uncle operating a camera.

OMG so true. The amount of times that's happened to me. I remember setting up the cutting of the cake shot then uncle bob steps directly in front of me.

hold breath it happens right give him 20 seconds to snatch a scene...still not moving....so I 'excuse me sir' him to which he replied 'do you mind? your interfering with the sound?' to which I bite my lip and think 'do you realise they are paying me over a thousand pounds to take these photo's for them?' Anyway, bride shoe's him out of the way and we carry on.

With amateurs this sort of thing happens a lot, I notice a lot fo professionals will always leave room behind them so you can cross behind the camera if I need to while an amateur will pitch up against the wall and block all access.

If you choose the right suppliers, it will not be a problem. I have worked alongside a TV crew of 9 (from a news org) down to uncle Bob...and indeed the grooms mum..(thankfully on that day she missed me splitting my trousers whilst bending down, although shot almost everything else)
None have been a problem and I have worked with vids in over 1000 weddings.
Oh...and on the trouser problem...as a pro I always carry a spare pair.?Just in case...

OMG sounds like a bit of a minefield.

If we definately decide on a videographer then it will be 2 different companies. We have already booked the photographer and H2B doesn't think we need or can afford a videographer but I am working on him. I am sure I will wear him down soon! ?

We've got both, they're both friends of the family. They'll work well together...

They've said they'll stay out of each others way, but I think it'll be funny to get a photo of the videographer and a video clip of the photographer! ?

In the main, great photographers and great videographers are individuals who work for themselves. Some companies offer both - I would say that they would either be really strong at one or the other, but it would be rare to find a company that excelled in both

Most pro-photographers and videographers work at weddings with each other week in week out, and will know how to work together. having the phone number of the other chap is nice and knowing they wil be there is nice too

Dont worry about it.. hire the individuals you are the most comfy with in terms of thier personalities, and the ones whose work you love

    __

    Caveat

Some photographers styles would rely on using the available light at a venue, and can produce really subtle stunning photography. A vidiographer intent on floodlighting everything will spoil this approach

Equally some over zelous photographers can be allover the house in the vidiographers frame, causing them all sorts of headaches. In the main the uncle george variety are the worst offenders

from the other point of view
    ?

I usually don't worry too much about photographers being in the frame. We work with them and make sure we both get the best possible images of the day.
The 2 things that does tend to bug me are photographers who constantly use flash for everything and make that flash go off 5 times a second. I once had a video where I nearly felt obliged to put in a warning for people with epilepsy. ?? The other is the focus assist beep sounds, they drive me up the wall when I'm cleaning up the sound from the ceremony and speeches ? Luckily all good photographers have managed to find the setting on their camera to switch that sound off ?

That video has done the rounds over the years? It does though ask one very important question.....Who has the "right" to the best position? The videographer or the photographer?
I once had a videographer ask me to move away as there was only one vantage point in the church for the ceremony. If there was another position from where I could have got the shots I would have to help out, although in this case, I would have been unable to deliver decent images, so I declined to move. I understood the reason for the request. he was using the wrong type of microphone and he was catching the sound of my shutter.

Manicb2b - I'm close to Guildford and married last year. We hired a professional photographer but asked a friend to video the ceremony & speeches and he also did some other bits too. Videographers normally start at £1k and we just couldn't afford it. I too think both can work in harmony whether professional or amateur. You need to work out what's important to you and what style of both you want.
BTW other posters, many of the HIBs have posted contact details and websites none of which was asked for - perhaps go and re-read the rules again?
