Photographer and Videographer?

SPtobeSH, 6 October, 2014 at 08:09 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hello Ladies,

We are in the early stages of planning and met a wonderful photographer at a wedding fayre. This caused us to have a bit of a debate on whether we will have both a videographer and photographer, both are quite costly! I just wanted to see whether you have decided to go for both or just one? Thank you and happy planning x

    We're having both.

Originally i'd have said never in a million years did I want a videographer, with all the usual reasons- don't like how I sound on camera, didn't think we'd watch it etc

Then a couple of years ago we worked with a videographer offering cinematic wedding films, which were head and shoulders above the more traditional wedding videos that we didn't like. We completely fell in love with them and they're not hours and hours long, so we know we'd watch our film loads.

I can't imagine not having our day filmed now. They just show the day in a whole different light and add another dimension to the coverage. It became one of our "must haves"

We're having both as well. I wouldn't originally have thought to have a videographer, but a lot of friends have said that they were so glad that they did book one. We're going to book one of the more contemporary style of videographers who blend in shots from the day with music, bits of speeches, conversations etc. They are quite expensive, but after your wedding is over you wont be left with much to remember it - video does capture more than just photos. I also like the idea of being able to share it with family members who are too old or too far away to make the wedding itself. You're probably paying a lot of money to put on your wedding, so spend a little more to capture the memories of it!

I'd have loved a videographer but we can't afford one :-( I'm going to take our camera and hopefully people will record little bits for us (first dance, speeches ect.) although.. And I'm keeping my fingers tightly crossed! Our celebrant has asked a contact to film the ceremony for her to use and if it all comes through we can have a copy for free xx

Easy to say, considering that everyone has a budget, although think about the long term value rather than the cost.

What do you really want? Even friends with camcorders is better than nothing IMHO.....It may not be as good, although it gives you a memory of the day...

I got married last year. Like yourself at first we weren't sure about video not because of cost but because of how we'd look/sound etc. Funnily enough I've probably watched the video more than I've looked through the album. So glad we did it.

The surprising thing to me is despite how many times I've heard the vows that when it came down to me being johnny on the spot that I cannot remember any part of the ceremony. In fact I reckon without video/photography evidence I would be convinced I was never there and it was all a dream!

You can always speak to your photographer and see if he/she can recommend someone. Personally I offer both as a package because I think it's a win for both. For me I get to work with someone I know & trust won't be getting in my way. For the customer it's one less supplier to deal with and no having to deal with Tog's and Vog's fighting like the proverbial cat & dog.

We couldnt afford a video either (16 years ago!) so we got an usher to put an uncles video camera on a tripod at the back of the church, then in the reception hall for the speeches.

i'm really glad we did, so we can watch the service back and hear the really sharp 'ting!!!' and see me stamp on something, as my wedding ring rolls off the vicars book, hits the floor and rolls towards the ventilation grating... ?

it's not perfect though, you'll get quite a few seconds of the back of the photographers head - but at least you'll have something!

I would recommend a videographer if you can afford one or maybe ask a guest to help out. One of our guests filmed the day (saved a fortune and he's made an amazing job of the final version,) and it's so nice to be able to watch it and remember the day. We've got the wedding ceremony on it (which is bit of blur to me from memory as the service just flew by) and all the speeches. I know I won't watch it all the time but I like the thought if watching it in the future, maybe with our children!

We used www.filmmakersoflondon.co.uk and they were great, we've watched our video back loads and love it. They're quite reasonable too, think the full day was only £599 or they even do a half day for about £300

Eeek. Both. In an ideal world....I know it hardly compares but I went for the video option on a skydive back in New Zealand. Happy days, I laugh every time I watch it. And reaching fro those extra few quid has blessed me for life!!! So whether you can reign back on things such as flowers or table decs, getting both would be awesome in the long run?! That or rock, paper, scissor it?? Good luck. Tough decisions....ah! x
