Photographer Dilemma

Mrs_T2B, 24 October, 2010 at 13:04 Posted on Planning 0 6

As some of you may remember me talking about previously I have never been 100% certain that I am happy with our photograoher that we have booked. He is such a lovely man, but there is just something that I'm not sure about. It's really confusing!

Anyway, just been to a wedding fayre at our venue and spoke to the photographer that we was first ever recommended to us by the chauffeur/owner of our wedding cars. They are a husband and wife team, very professional, amazing pictures, I felt so comfortable speaking with her (she's very mumsy), she did the whole sales jargon and was very impressive. The work was stunning, her albums were breathtaking, and she has left me very confused! I know you are probably thinking my mind is made up so what's the point in this post but I don't want to hurt the feelings of our current photographer by cancelling him. Yes we will lose our £200 deposit, but on the other hand this lady who we've seen today has said she will knock £200 off her deposit which is £250 so we won't be out of pocket. Her company is more expensive and will cost us about £300 more. We've just watched a DVD of her work and I felt so emotional watching it, it just seemed so perfect!

Please help, Mrs_T2B x

Like you say it sounds as though you have made up your mind.

Its no good worrying about hurting the other mans feelings if you have to live with photos of your special day that you are not happy with. I think the photos are one of the most important things on your wedding day. x

I say you've got to go with your instinct!

I'm a wedding tog getting married next year and its been an unbelievably stressful decision deciding on my tog and in the end i went for the first one that was recommended to me!

You don't have to tell the 1st tog the reason you are cancelling.......

Don't worry, just do whats best for you....you don't get another chance.

To be honest, a chauffeur isn't the best person to recommend a photographer... another bride is

There are so many backhanders and cross referrals in the industry, I would generally advise people to take recommendations from other suppliers with a pinch of salt

A face book page inst the ideal vehicle to demonstrate your photography. What is it about the second photographer you like so much in comparison to the first one?

Let's address this in more detail.

As a bride you have to be confident in the ability of your photographer. You aren't and this will show in the photos regardless of the photographer.

There are a lot of backhanders in this industry, a lot. Alarm bells start rigning when they say their sales pitch was so good and that they would match the deposit lost by knocking it off their pricing.

Says to me they are over priced to start with...but that's me and even though you are doubting your current guy please, shop around.

As for the first photographer, if it's in their contract with you that they allow cancellations with just the loss of deposit then fair enough, no real reason to worry.

One point though, a deposit is refundable. Legally a deposit should be refunded after payment has been made which is why I now define it as a 'part payment' in my contract.

Always ask to see a full album from a wedding, it's easy to cherry pick the best images and sell them as your work. I was at a wedding fayre today and I was the only photographer handing out a full album on CD to potential customers.

What I would say is though, that comparing the two Kav Matthews has a better site and better images to look at...a lot of staged stuff and the music AAARGH....pet hate! (I found the main site for Smith photo too and it wasn't pretty).

My neck of the woods again, Nottingham and Mansfield!

I'll be frank and say I've heard nothing about either of these photographers, that's not a bad thing, but maybe it helps me give a fair comment.

I like both sets of shots, but as others have said, it's all about how YOU feel. If you're not comfortable around your photographer your photographs won't look comfortable either! I wouldn't like to trust something as important as my Wedding Photos to someone who only had a "shop window" on Facebook though...

    Go with your heart...

Before anybody gets the wrong idea about deposits read this:

    http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/kent/factsheets/FS5NEW%20nov07%20refunds.pdf

You can only ask for a refund of a deposit if it is agreed before hand and is in writing. as changing your mind is you cancelling the contract and there for forfiting any money paid.
